Hello, I'm currently running Windows Vista Home Premium. But i dont really like the system and i dont want to use it anymore, I have heard alot recently about Linux. I dont know anything about the OS but I have heard it is much faster than Windows Vista. Is this true? Is it a safer, more reliable and better system? I use my computer for Facebook, Photography, and Emails.
Is this perfect for me?

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint 8 Download

The Perfect Desktop - Linux Mint 8 (Helena) Installation

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 8 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

Also worth looking at is Ubuntu 9.10

Ubuntu 9.10 can also be run straight from the LiveCD

INSTALL UBUNTU WITHIN WINDOWS

Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi

You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the Wubi installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Ubuntu (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Ubuntu is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Ubuntu

Yes. Linux is great for what you have in mind. HOWEVER

no iTunes (yet.. give it 6 months) Plenty of alternatives but no brand name iTunes

Gaming is Meh.. (except for ID software stuff. That works better than great)

if neither of those things bug you, then yes. Linux is going to a positive for you.

As for which distro...

Okay. Ubuntu is good. It is. It really is very well supported and no problemns with the installs and all that. BUT.. it is NOT any better than any other distro. In the long run it is the same as any other distro. You are going to find this out... It's WAY more about what you want.

Now.. for what you discribed.. facebook, photos and email.. I mean.. you can do that with a puppy or DSL live CD. But it's not a modern computer the way Ubuntu, or Mint or PcLos or Meppis or any of those big heavies are.

Yes it is safer and faster because it doesn't need antivirus and it is very good for photography because there is an application called gimp image editor in ubuntu which is a linux distro. Ubuntu is also great for facebook and emails. It has a program called evolution mail. I used facebook on my ubuntu and works perfectly.

i might say Ubuntu, it fairly is amazingly user-friendly to apply for a beginner, in spite of the undeniable fact that it nevertheless has the means to do very stepped forward issues additionally GNOME is a laptop environment, like KDE. Ubuntu comes with GNOME. in case you go with a greater living house windows-like environment you need to use Kubuntu it fairly is Ubuntu with the KDE environment quite than GNOME. a competent project with Ubuntu is which you would be able to alter between the variations very actual, only employing synaptic equipment supervisor (a software you will use lots in case you get Ubuntu or Debian) you may replace laptop environments and upload the effective properties of each version with basically some clicks. additionally Ubuntu is predicated off debian, so they're comparable yet ubuntu is designed to be greater consumer-friendly.

Personally i use Ubuntu and love it! and from what you use it for is fine.it is much safer and there's plenty of free software and programs in the Synaptic Package Manager for just about anything you could need for software, games, programs.and it will run great in just about any decent pc or mac. Mine is a Pentium 4 with 1 gig of ram it it works just fine. and there is plenty of help if needed in the ubuntu forums. just post a question or search them .http://ubuntuforums.org/
