Top Ten Reasons to use Ubuntu (written in 2006)

After Ubuntu, Windows Looks Increasingly Bad, Increasingly Archaic, Increasingly Unfriendly (written in 2007)

Both articles are comparatively old as Ubuntu has come on leaps and bounds since then making it even better

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 6 Main Edition which is Ubuntu based. Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled.

You would be best off RUNNING IT LIVE so you can get the feel of things.

Once you have got the feel of things you may wish to consider an installation

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 6 then you need to create a Bootable CD from the ISO. This can easily be done using Nero Burning ROM or similar software. Linux Mint can also be run straight from the LiveCD you have created without touching your Hard Drive.

Remember you can RUN IT LIVE !

Ubuntu has many different advantages, as do all Linux Distros. Ubuntu is also fairly user friendly, though I personally feel that Linux Mint is more user friendly. There is a great amount of Software to choose from when it comes to Ubuntu (30,000+ packages) as does all Debian based Distros since Ubuntu is basically a port of Debian. Fedora 13 which is the Testing Grounds for Red Hat Enterprise Linux is also very user friendly, though the software selection is not as broad as Debian's. The GUI of Fedora is more server/administrative based so it is not as pretty as say Ubuntu or Linux Mint or Sabayon Linux, etc., though you have the option of changing that it you so wish. It really is all about what you prefer, kind of like ice cream, after tasting some you end up picking out a favorite or several favorites.

Advantage's are no viruses its faster and has the most personalization of any operating system. It is easy to find and install programs and there is a add/remove programs program that comes with Ubuntu that has thousands of programs that you simply click to install. Disadvantages to run windows programs you need the download wine form the add/remove programs program and even then windows programs are slow and can have problems. There are alternatives to windows programs that do not need wine. But just don't expect to be able to go installing all of your normal windows programs and have then all work quickly and flawlessly. The only other issue would be the learning curve it is a new operating system and although it is similar to windows it will take a while before you know your way around as well as you do in windows.

good luck hope you like your netbook.

Well Linux, specifically Ubuntu, is a lot more lightweight that a Windows OS. I personally dual boot Vista and Ubuntu; and I love Ubuntu. Obviously if you're not entirely linux-literate there is a subtle learning curve, and software installation does use a bit more command-line entry than Windows installers but then Ubuntu features support by real people for anything you find wrong with it, it's community-driven and a breath of fresh air from MS's idea of "here's windows, you like it!". Ubuntu is incredibly customizable and has eye-candy that, in my opinion, kicks vista out the water thanks to Compiz fusion / "unsupported".

If you rely heavily on Windows apps then maybe stick with it; it does support most apps out there; but if you fancy a bit of a change, and don't want to contribute to MS's monopoly of the PC market then give Ubuntu a go. Also there are apps for Linux to allow you to run Windows apps in a compatibility layer (such as WINE) so I'd very much recommend Ubuntu- it's brilliant unless you have specific needs to run games/certain Win software.

you can also install wine so you can run some programs and games for windows :)
