I am begging someone to help me PLEASE.I have WD Passport Ultra, I ACCIDENTALLY removed access to 'everyone' in Security. Then Passport turned to NTFS and is now 'Local File F:.Help how do I repair?
I was trying to set a password on WD Passport, but ended up doing something ridiculous mad[in hindsight] and I am terrified I have lost 10,000s of images over years of work and history. Please help? WD is now showing as Local file on my computer. It was saying NTFS. History: It was working fine, an hour ago. I then went to Properties and Security and then I pressed Everyone and pressed Deny permission. I thought it would ask me for a password, but it didn't.Then when I tried to go back to properties to allow back permission, I thought this would be easily changeable, it said 'You must have read permissions' 'Access denied' and all these access denied messages. It then changed to a NTFS file and said passport above. Then I read somewhere restart computer. So I did and it just says Local File F:and '0bytes' where I had 500GB before. Please someone help me I AM FREAKING out. Please help me recover all my files.Thank you very much for your time.

rightclick the drive

select security

click edit

click add

type in everyone

click check name

click ok

click full control

click apply

also you have to be an ADMIN for this to work

if it does not work

try the icacls command in command prompt

icacls /? (for icacls help)

icacls /grant :(drive letter) everyone:f

that should fix it

Hello there,

I'm sorry to hear that you lost access to your data, I hope I'll be able to help.

If you only changed the Windows permission for the drive you might be able to access your data by using a different OS. You can use a bootable Ubuntu CD, that doesn't require installation, but will allow you to test Ubuntu on your computer. Connect your external HDD and you might be able to copy all your data to a different HDD. Once that is done you can Windows Disk Management to format the Passport drive so you can use it again. If you are still not able to access your data even under a different OS you might need to use the services of a professional data recovery company. If that's the case have a look at the list of WD Data recovery Partners on WD web site. Good luck.
