I lost ownership of my trash can and home folder on my mac. I've been able to recover my trash can through the terminal but I havent found a way to recover my home folder. Ive tried disk utility repair permissions and many other things. Though terminal code would be the best solution. "sudo chown" is something related I believe. Please help!!!

On Mac OS 10.5 (and probably earlier versions too, but I'm not positive) the ownership of your Home folder looks like this from the Terminal:

drwxr-xr-x 12 yourid staff

(Substitue the short name of your account for "yourid".) So if you launch the Terminal application, you would enter the following command to set the ownership appropriately:

sudo chown /Users/yourid yourid:staff

You'll then be prompted for the root password (which you hopefully know). If the directory permissions are not set correctly, you could follow with the command:

sudo chmod /Users/yourid 755

I don't know a thing about using Sudo commands, sorry.

Have you tried opening Finder > choose your Home folder > right (ctrl) click > Get Info > Ownership & Permissions > Details > Change the Owner and Access to Read & Write?

If that doesn't work, you'll find the Sudo command from here if someone has submitted a hint about it.
