Laptops are built to self destruct. It requires complete dis-assembly to blow out the dust and remove the hair to prevent overheating. I do my desktops twice a year. Laptops would require several hours of work to do the same because the fan is not removable from the outside, and that is where the hairballs accumulate that block airflow. Get a lapboard to improve circulation, especially one with a fan. Keep your house cleaned of hair and dust (big job if you have a cat or dog). Or; just buy a desktop that's easy to clean and a compressor to blow it out with (canned air doesn't cut it). Clean and optimize your hard drive with Advanced SystemCare 6 (free forever). Download from CNET.

I've only seen it lose what you're currently working on when it happens. It really doesn't happen unless you have some hardware issues going on or something. You might set it to defragment once a week.
