I'm about to go to college, and my major is computer science but I don't know what kind of computer to buy. I want to know what characteristics are good for a computer science student. I was thinking of buying an Mac but I have no idea of which one to buy.

Mac is a bad call, you need nothing more than a working computer, not a working computer sporting Core, not a working computer with high-grade graphics, not a working computer with 16GB of RAM (maybe if you do have an eye to virtualized development then more RAM is better), JUST a computer, with that note a Chromebook being modded and broke out to run proper Linux is as optimal as optimal goes.

Find machine without Windows OS installed, intel processor with highest gen for that type, if possible good GPU, 8GB DDR4 ram is must. If you wanna build setup, then go for AMD ryzen 3rd gen.

I have a Macbook Pro 15 inch and I love it. At the same time, this year's Macbook Air is great and I would highly reccomend that or wait for the new pro coming out soon. The specs are great and its highly portable and compatible.

If you're looking at windows, I'd Reccomend an HP Envy or a Dell XPS

No, not Mac. Get an old cheap and basic Intel-based computer, the cheapest you can afford, that still works perfectly (even on batteries if it's a laptop) then install both Windows and Linux to it. Though you will be tempted to do so, don't install games on it. You'll thank me later.

I've been in Software QA for a good 20 years. Across the board, most every developer I work with is on a MacBook Pro, with at least 16G RAM and SSD's. It is by far the most widely used device for software development. If you can afford it, that would be your best bet.

the best you can afford. NOT a Mac. not because they are BAD (they aren't), just because MORE people use Windows PCs, so you should familiarize yourself with those.

also, PCs are cheaper, so get a decent Core i7 with an SSD.

Macs are expensive. They are no better than IBM clones. Ask your tutor for advice. Paint your name on it with permanent marker or it will dissapear in college.
