Question:
Does RAM = increased download speed?

I currently have 512 (2 x 256 sticks) in my computer. I recently ordered 2 gb (2 x 1 gig sticks). After my upgrade I will be at 2256 of RAM in my computer. It will hold a max of 3 gigs. Will that help increase my download speed? Right now it is painfully slow and I am paying for 20 mb roadrunner internet. I am downloading at about 1kb a sec. (If it makes it that high). If not, what can I do to help. It's killing me.

Ram increase would only help if the computer was so blocked up with active processes using hard drive memory as active memory that it slowed the application doing the download.

Slow download can happen in a lot of ways. It is often due to limitations on the remote (source) computer, either because so many people are taking from that site that it has divided its capacity into small bits for everyone, or because that computer has limited its output to any given individual (you might see this on some appplications like limewire, for example).

A second important source of problem is that your connection is nominally 20mb, but you share bandwidth with several other users, so combined that short link between you and the server is used by several people and there is not enough bandwidth on that spur to allow the full nominal capacity to you personally. This happens to me at work sometimes, where there are multiple users linked to a server from the same building over the same lines (several companies using the same provider).

And of course, there may be limitations on your end, with your software or modem.

Greetings. My name's Sanjay Patel, and I currently hold an honorary Master's degree in the field of Computer Science. I am aware of, and have personal knowledge related to your question. There are computer maintenance businesses which are probably in your area, however they come at the cost of hiring a professional to enter your home. There may also be some local destinations where you can drop off your computer and wait to have a technician look at it. These options can often be costly, and pretty inconvenient. The answer to this question can probably be found doing a little extra research on Google.

A well-running computer can be a hard thing to maintain. From my experience, there is but only One software which is reputable- and consistently reliable for healing sick, slow computers. Reimageā„¢ is a world-renown, easy to use software designed by Forensic scientists and made for the average person. This thing will fix literally just about ANY problem you could possibly be having with your PC. Reimage was recommended to me by a Professor during my 2nd year of Graduate school.

I am a professional developer with Microsoft, and have about 10 years of experience in the field of Computer Engineering. Most problems with PC's are the result of malicious software that infected a Computer. Examples of this are things such as malware, viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, root kits, and worms. In other cases, they are the result of stability issues due to crashes, freezes, or Hardware Issues. Some examples of hardware issues could be a dirty cooling fan causing the computer to overheat, or low memory due to lack of RAM, which could cause the PC to run slowly. You may think it could be a virus, or malware, or registry issues, but it could be something else entirely. As a computer layman, one may find it hard to really ascertain what exactly is causing the problems, without having a professional do an in depth analysis of your PC.

As professional computer repairs can be quite costly, I would recommend to you a Software that many of us in the tech department here at Microsoft use personally and professionally to diagnose and repair computer problems very quickly. It is a software called Reimage, from https://tr.im/ReimageRepair .. In my personal experience, and in the experience of many of my associates, this is probably the best software ever created for those experiencing computer troubles. This is likely to remedy just about ANY problem your computer could possibly be having, and have it running like new. Reimage has won several awards, and been featured in publications such as PC Mag.

Increasing RAM may lead to better performance of your browser, and hence surf speeds, but if you really want good Download speeds, then purchase a high bandwidth connection.(About 1Mbps will do)

Sorry to say that NO, increasing your RAM will not speed up downloading. Increasing your RAM will only increase your computer's processing speed and it's accessing/handling/processing of programs and files. It will help you in multi tasking and having several programs running at the same time as the computer have more memory to handle these tasks.

To increase your download speed, your internet connection/subscription to your ISP (in your case Raodrunner) should be at high speed and so with all the internet settings set at high speed.

Nope, RAM affects your computer's speed and not the internet connection's. To increase download speed, get a good ISP (Internet service provider) with good speed. 20mb connection shouldn't have such slow download speeds like 1kb/s. I have a 256kb internet but I could download like 40kb/s. You should complain to your ISP or it could also be caused by viruses slowing your connection.

RAM has nothing to do with your internet speed.

It's most likely malware or a trojan that's causing the problems.

There are 2 ways of doing it

Attempt to remove the malware. I'll give you a few links:

MalwareBytes antimalware:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Kaspersky online scanner:

http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

and Kaspersky rescue disk:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Kaspersky-Rescue-Disk.shtml

(you need to burn this ISO file using IMGburn into a DVD. then, boot into this disc at startup to begin the Kaspersky virus scanner program)

2nd method:

Reinstall Windows.

It seems you have a quite old computer, (512 must be an old compt.), I would have gone first to changing the network card (or modem), more memory could partially solve the problem but I really don't think that is the solution.

RAM increases your speed of the computer itself.

You need faster internet connection

Average dial-up is 54kbps

You want broadband getting you about 250kbps at least.

Your computer should run hell fast though :)

no. ram has nothing to do with download speeds. call roadrunner and have them test the connection.
