it is invisible by default so you don't accidently alter the contents while you are using windows.
to access it, you need to find the documentation for your laptop. just google your model number and the manufactuer's website should come up. there is a specific key on the keyboard that you must tap as you turn the computer on. when you do this, a special recovery menu shows up. this button will definitely be listed in the user guide in the "recovery" section.
unfortunately, the key is not standard from different manufacters. although most times it is one of the F-buttons, i believe some toshiba satellites use the 0(zero) key.

Let's assume for a second that you don't have one. In this case, you can use an outside program like Partition Commander. Partition Commander is able to take the contents of your HDD and effectively split them up into two groups.
You can set up a partition strictly for your OS and major programs (which is what I do) or you can use it as a backup tool. It's handy to try and look for an all in one type of package. You might want to ask the Experts over at SoftCity what their opinions are...
I know that when I ordered my Laptop from NewEgg, my HDD came with a division, 50 GB for OS and programs, 150GB for everything else, plus an external for additional space and backup capability. I can find it by searching the Windows 7 Library, or Explorer (for earlier Windows versions)

It depends entirely on the manufacturer. You can have a CD, you can have a restore partition or you can have neither (you have to buy a CD from the manufacturer).
If you have a restore partition it can be a normal Windows partition (it'll show up as a disk drive, not necessarily the D drive), or it can be a non-Windows partition and it won't show up in Windows (it'll show at startup as a prompt telling you which key to press to restore Windows).

During boot up watch the screens, if you have a backup it will show the key to press.
Generally this partition is on D: if you computer is set up that way.

It ability precisely what it says. extra or much less, no abode windows is put in. Its especially elementary to repair....... you merely want a abode windows deploy disk. Restart the pc and bypass into the BIOS with the help of hitting F2 or F12 or DEL (or some variety of key like that) substitute the boot series to place the CD-ROMchronic to First on the checklist. shop & go out bios. merely google on doing a clean abode windows deploy. And if your son is an exceptionally massive laptop gamer, your probly no longer gonna discover something close to sufficient for todays video games in a refurb'd gadget. They require severe ability to run decently. i might advise getting a console gadget like a PS3 if he doesnt care if its laptop or no longer. good success!
