Basically, I downloaded Portal through Steam. I have Windows XP, and I was pretty sure that my computer had the requirements, but maybe not. So I try to play it and it's like "you need a minimum of DirectX 8.0" So I go to Microsoft and download DirectX 10, the latest version. It still says the same thing, even after I restart. I don't know what to do. Do I need to go out and get some hardware? How can I check whether the hardware I have is sufficient? Please help.

DirectX 10 doesn't work under XP, only Vista. I'm surprised it even installed.

On the other hand, here's the link to Microsoft for DirectX 9, which I happened to have just looked up for someone.

Hope that helps.

If your graphics card doesn't support direct x 10 or above 8, you need a new one if you want to play portal, because you can have direct x installed but if it isn't supported by your graphics card it isn't going to do any good.
