Linux cli instructions are specific from home windows dos instructions. Here is a record of one of the elementary ones. If you understand a command you'll be able to discover extra information approximately it with the person command: e.g. guy cd You additionally must be mindful of the direction used within the command. See the moment hyperlink If you're for your /residence listing and Downloads is a subdirectory you must use the command cd /Downloads If you've gotten a further subdirectory withing the Downloads listing the command might be cd Downloads/other_directory Do now not use the caps CD for the difference listing command it will have to be cd. You do must use the / to designate a listing. Good success

Because you are not root user. In Ubuntu the root account is disabled to keep people from messing the operating system up. You user password is used for indirect connecting to the root account and even that is limited as to what you can do. You need to use the SU or SUDO command to gain root access, but since I don't use the terminal for any thing I can not tell you what that command is.

Why can't you type anything? What happens when you try? How are you getting a root shell prompt exactly?

Make sure your keyboard is plugged in and working. Then, (If I remember correctly)press ctlr+d. This will cause the shell to disappear. Go to it again. Try it again. If that fails, restart your computer and try again. Anyway, I don't see how the Ubuntu account could be locked (or have a password set)if you just installed Ubuntu. It should remain unlocked until you get up and running completely. Remember, on the login screen, DON'T capitalize any letters in Ubuntu.
It would just be like so:
Login: ubuntu
Password:
Press enter.
@JoelKatz, he is in recovery mode. Take a look at his former question.
