Well, from personal experience do NOT use Dell. They have TERRIBLE customer service. They sent me a defective computer and I had to PAY to ship it back. So don't use them!

Also, do not order a computer through the mail using any other company either. During shipment, the fans come lose and cause loads of problems! Mail delivery with computers is bad!

From experience, I wouldn't use Best Buy ever again either because they have TERRIBLE customer service as well. It wasn't until I got completely ticked off and sent them an angry email that they actually suggested something helpful. They kept trying to blame my computer problems on ME. It was not me. The computer was defective when I bought it! So yeah, if you use Best Buy and have problems, you may have even more problems with customer service. Just be stern with them!

As far as brands are concerned, never EVER buy an E-Machine. This is what I bought from Best Buy and it is a POS. I'm serious. I have had so many problems with this computer. E-Machine is a subsidiary (sp?) company of Gateway. I wouldn't buy a Gateway for that reason either.

Now, my brother and sister have HP's. My brother in fact has an HP laptop and desktop. My sister has a newer desktop. They have had ZERO problems out of their computers.

In conclusion, I suggest getting an HP. I think these are good quality computers. Try buying the fastest computer you can afford. Getting a lot of space is nice too.

I purchase and repair computers for our company. I'm partial to Dell. I bought about 50 of them in the last 3 years. They are as reliable as any other major brand. Lots of bang for the buck. When I did experience a problem, they stood behind their product.

Decide how much money you can afford to spend. Pick a model in your price range. Just about any PC is good enough to access the Internet. A 90's vintage Pentium 2 can still access the Internet. The only choice you need to make is how you intend to connect. If using dial-up, you need a modem. If using High-Speed, you need a network card. If using wireless, you need a wireless card.

Be sure you add enough RAM. Many PCs come with 256 MB RAM. Although Microsoft recommends at least 128 MB RAM, you need lots more if you actually want to run any programs. Windows XP works a lot better with at least 512 MB RAM.

You should be able to find a nice PC for about $500. You can buy one for less but you will scrimp on power and have very little warranty.

You say you want to write letters. Window has a very basic word processor. It has no spell check and very limited formatting capabilities. You may want to consider an Office Suite. Word Perfect is an OK program to consider. Economical, but you get what you pay for. Microsoft Office 2003 Basic edition is much better. It has a very good word processor, spreadsheet program, and an email client. About $100

Well buying brand new is an option but so is buying slightly used. HP or Dell is the easiest and safest way to get what you want, its includes most software and you get at least a 1 year warranty with an option of paying more for a longer one. But I would suggest Ebay and buy your Tower(Motherboard, video/audio card, memory, hard drive, ect.) Monitor, and Sound system separately. I have had 2 friends who just got their first pc in the last 2 weeks and I helped them look on ebay and both found great deals. If your not gaming or using your pc for watching and recording video, or running multiple programs at once, you can find what you need cheap. Processor speed of 1.00ghz or more, hard drive with 80Gb or less, ramm/memory of 512MB, and at least 1 cd-r or dvd writer. If you plan to keep awhile I would spend a little more and get a processor with 2.00ghz or more, a larger hard drive(up to 250GB), and most important at least 1GB of ramm, this is crucial for your pc to perform multi-tasking. Both my friends spent below $600 in total hardware and shipping costs and got a HP with 2.8ghz speed, 120GBhard drive, 1GB Ramm, a 200-watt 2.1 sound system with large sub, and a CRT 22" NEC monitor which is great quality just a little heavy and large, but you will pay big-time for a flat-screen that size. Bear in mind this is all slightly used or returns but open a ebay and paypal account and you are covered and will get a refund if for some reason items are defective, this did not happen with either of my friends, buy from a seller who has good feedback and a good record. Then all you need is anti-virus software and whatever accessories you need or want, and of course a good internet provider, pay the extra for cable if you can, phonelines suck and dsl is not fast. By the way most of the towers on ebay come with a new keyboard and mouse, if you need help or have more questions find my answers email link at my profile.

the only requirement to apply a computer screen is that the connector on the tip of the computer screen's cable extra wholesome the video connector on the very own laptop. There are 2 distinctive uncomplicated connections. maximum computers use a fifteen pin VGA connector. in all probability ninety% of the montors interior the international are 15 pin VGA. There are some extra moderen video reveal gadgets and computers that use a connector noted as a DVI. yet those are in basic terms one video reveal gadgets or computers made interior the final year (and not maximum of them). If the connector is the incorrect type, you may get an adpator for type of $5-10 which will enable you to hook a VGA to a DVI laptop, or vice versa.

I like Dells, but u gotta treat em right. Whatever your choice, don't get a mac, cuz they are terrible. They not compatible with anything, and you will not be able to network as easily
