Why does shared web hosting offer unlimited bandwidth but dedicated servers or VPS hosting does not?

Just curious why you don't get unlimited data transfer if you're paying A LOT more for a dedicated server or virtual private server.

shared hosting providers usually have their servers on an unmetered line, which will be shared among their many clients. You could get an unmetered line for your dedicated/VPS, but it would cost you a real lot.

For mostly static pages and osCommerce, that bandwidth is what I call severe. it may propose you're turning out to be lots of vacationers. yet once you at the instant are not getting lots of vacationers, or there at the instant are not plenty clicks between diverse pages, then it's time to inspect. Do you have an information application on your cyber web hosting? Like awstats or webalizer. If definite, seem at what they (stats application) say approximately your site visitors. in brief, that's amazingly severe a site visitors to miss approximately. by dedicated cyber web hosting, do you propose you have a VPS or a dedicated server? If a dedicated server, $a hundred and fifty seems ok (a splash above commonplace, yet ok), yet once you have a vps, then you are paying severe. approximately shared cyber web hosting, there is not something incorrect (you're only sharing the server ingredients with many different purchasers), and it extremely is extremely extra fee-effective. yet whilst your site visitors are authentic travellers, i does not propose you a shared cyber web hosting, because it extremely is going to fee you extra funds than $a hundred and fifty (for lost sales) in the adventure that your website runs sluggish or is going down, only because of fact the shared server is crammed with many heavy web content like yours. often, your project if to locate no count if the bandwidth is brought about by authentic travellers (it extremely is a small DoS attack). Your next component to decision-making might count on that answer.

there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth and unlimited space. Even my host (Chime Host), they offer unlimited option but they are clear on their site that clients are not allowed to use excessive cpu resources or cause heavy load on the server. Therefore, you will never reach that stage where you get to use tons of space and tons of bandwidth on a shared hosting environment. If you start using tons of bandwidth/space on a package that cost only $4.95 per month, chances are you will cause heavy load on the server. The second you reach that stage, your account will be suspended and you will be asked to move to vps or dedicated server.

The term to describe this is called overselling... You can read up on this on one of Google's Knols: http://knol.google.com/k/jonathan-burdon/web-hosting/1p36hfxlyxfh8/2#
Most people think they need dedicated web hosting; however, in reality shared web hosting offers more than enough server resources for the average website. Some of the best shared web hosting site are featured on http://www.alreadyhosting.com .
Hope this helps.

That's mainly because shared providers can get away with it since they have a tight grib on your usage. VPS or dedicated not so easily because they don't have a way of "policing" your "unlimited" usage.
