In Windows Explorer, how do I hide the icons next to each filename? I don't need to see them and it slows down

If you don't know what Windows Explorer is then maybe you shouldn't answer this one.. but the icons are unnecessary to me. I want a simple list of files without the icons.

To my knowledge, you can't hide them completely, but you can minimize their size.
Select the folder, go to Menu bar and select View then your choice of view settings. But to add a little more to that. If you would like all your folders to view the same, like List or Details, for example. Then open Windows Explorer and select your hard drive. Then go to View on the menu bar and select whatever view option you prefer, details for example. Now click on Tools in the Menu bar, then select Folder Options. Now click on the View tab and click on the Apply to All Folders button.
Once they're all set to the same viewing option. You can then go back, if you'd like, and reset the view on any single folder. A good example of this would be to set your picture folders to Thumbnails.

You can't hide the icons completely, none of the views offered in Windows (Thumbnails, Tiles, Icons, List, Details) will hide the file icons. If you're that concerned (and I'm not sure why you would be, displaying icons in a folder is unlikely to be the root cause of any system slowdown issues) then you can browse the files in your machine from the text-only command prompt:
