Is it possible to perform a system recovery?

I recently had to turn off the fuse so that my bathroom light switch could be fixed. I accidently hit the fuse that controls the livingroom and it turned off my computer. (The computer was running) I didn't really think anything of it, since we get ppower outages all the time, but when I went to turn it on (about twenty minutes later), the computer doesn't load past the "COMPAQ" screen. I've tried hitting ESC, F1, and F10, but none of them work. If this helps, the lights on my keyboard that indicate numlock/capslock don't light up when they usually do on start up. I don't have a system recovery disc either. What I'm wondering is if there's a way to get my computer running again with a system recovery. (non-destructive is preferable, but I'm desperate) I haven't backed up any files, either. Only answer if you can help.

There are diskette images available online.

Do a search for Compaq system restore.

The problem is that the Compaq machines use a hidden partition on the hard drive to store the ROM/BIOS details.

You can also look into these excellent freeware items:

- Test disk (recovery) at:

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

- g4u (backup utility) at:

http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/

(this can be used before your recovery, backup what is NOW on your partitions)

Be patient and go and ask questions at different forums.

Some good forums are associated with different Linux distributions (Debian, Slackware, Ubuntu, . . .). You might even find that you would benefit from switching to Linux.

Good luck (and contact me if you think I might be able to help with more info)

Hi. The first thing to try is to cycle the power management. How you do that is simply unplug your tower, then hit the power button. This drains all of the capacitors, etc., inside the tower. If you plug it back in and still can't get past the "splash" screen, we need to clear CMOS. There are 2 ways to do this... We're gonna do it the easier way. Open the case. This is either held on by a set of phillips head screws, or by buttons / levers. When you get the case open, and you can see the "guts", look for a battery. It's flat, about the size of a nickel. Remove it, count to 30, and put it back in. Now, this is going to reset your computer's clock, and the order in which it boots back to default. When your computer boots back up, if it still isn't stuck at the "splash" screen, it's going to give you a warning that the clock has been reset. It will tell you to hit F1 to continue, or some other button (commonly this is DELETE) to enter system setup. IF you get this option, you should be back in business. Go into system setup and set the clock. Follow the directions on the bottom of the screen.

Rest easy, though. Since you aren't getting past the "splash" screen right now, odds are that you haven't corrupted the operating system, so once you get the problem resolved, you should be back to normal. If all of the above fails, send me a message, and I will try to help you further.

Maybe you should of pulled th eplug out before messing around with the electrics!!!

Try restarting the pc and see if this works

You don't say how old computer is either, system restore is much easier to do on windows vista, but on xp you will find it here and i have used it in much less serious circumstances

and it worked [ my documents etc should not be affected , only thing will be that stuff you have downloaded] ok follow this, go to start-all programs-accessories-- system tools then system restore and please follow the instructions , you have to pick a restore point before it happened, then restart pc if it asks and turn as a normal , Good Luck and be careful with your computer, and i would suggest completley turning off your laptop/pc when not in use in future.

The best way is to contact your PC vendor as your data is important, don't play with it yourself.

there seems to be a problem in hard disk or the BIOS settings, as if you can see the compaq screen then it means that your other devices are working, but may your computer is not able to boot from the hard disk.

attempt downloading Avast! AntiVirus. it is the final unfastened AV utility i've got ever used once I had a computer. Do you ensue to have the device restoration disk? if so, visit a pair electronics keep, get a diskchronic you could plug it, restore the pc and return the diskchronic as quickly as the pc works. it is my ultimate suggestion. If no restore cd, then i'm uncertain what else you're able to do. i became into going to point what you already did.
