if you replace the motherboard you'll have to replace the processor as well as memory as for the graphics card most motherboard come with a built in graphics card and most aren't to bad either but if you're into gaming in a big way then go for a new graphics card but otherwise don't bother with the extra expense

your old psu should power a new motherboard no problem and you old hard drive and dvd drives should work as well so over all it shouldn't be to expensive

you'll need an operating system for your new pc you'll need either vista or xp you can even install linux

now the last bit of advice if your friends dad is not really pc savvy then he shouldn't try to put a pc together he can hit problems and not know how to deal with them.

if anything is put together wrong then you can do some damage if you blow the processor it's an expensive replacement

Your XP operating system will work with the new motherboard. Upon first boot, XP will notice that many devices have changed and will ask you to authenticate again... If you are lucky. Usually booting after swapping a motherboard causes Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) because drivers are being loaded that go with devices on your old motherboard but sometimes, it does work. If it doesn't work, format your hard drive and re-install XP.

Whether or not a new motherboard will fit in the case you currently have is tricky because some computer manufacturers have proprietary cases and motherboards that are non-standard.

A new motherboard with CPU and RAM starts about $100. You can get a new case with power supply for $50. A new video card that can play today's games is about $50. You can also purchase a "barebones" system that will have all that installed for $219.

ddr2 mother boards would definitely need different DDR's, so your old DDR wouldn't be compatible anymore for your new DDR2 type mother board..

in addition, you "may" use your old processor and graphics card, if and only if, they would fit your board.. i mean, maybe your old board requires a AGP type of graphics card, and your new one will come with the new PCI slot graphics card, so definitely, you have to buy a new graphics card..

lucky if you can still change your processor, but if you want to change it for better performance, then go..

well, for the vista or XP thingy, yup, you have to install the operating system because you have new mother board and processor which needs your OS to specify them..

well if i were you, then just go to a computer shop and ask them to do it for you instead of some one who doesnt know about it.. :D

goodluck by the way!

hai, i guess you missed the processor. also, ddr2 is also old, ddr3 is latest one. if you want a decent configuration, mail me what components you have and how much you will spend and ill give you two or three good configurations. if you want any specific thing like a good sound card, and others, please specify that also. as far as fixing all the parts together, that is assembling is concerned, its damn easy, anyone can do it. you didn't specify your doubt. be clear with what you want to know and i acn help you.

You can probably put it all together and it will still work. My advice, just get a new computer.
