Well depending on the game, many games only need their compatibility settings setup. Right click on the game>properties> compatibility and set it to whatever the system requirements says on the box. For many games, this is all it needs.

However, to answer your question, yes it is possible to have an installation of Windows XP installed alongside Windows 7 in a dual-boot configuration, it has to be done chronologically, meaning formatting the hard drive, partitioning it for XP, installing XP, then installing 7 on the other partition. Since that would likely result in losing important data, I do not recommend it.

I would also check to make sure there are not any patches for the software to update it on the company's website. That will often fix these kinds of issues.

What you are looking to do is called dual-booting and it's some what tricky to set up but rather easy to use.

You should probably have a professional set it up for you. You could potentially wipe out your hard drive if you don't know what your doing.

Once its set up there is no more risk of wiping out your data than there is right now. and its just a matter of restarting the computer each time you want to switch windows versions.

EDIT: many people have suggested using a virtualization product. While this is some what easier to set up it will not work well with gaming. Unless your computer is out of this world powerful or the game is very old any game run in the virtualized environment will run exceptionally slow. This is because all resources in the computer have to be shared between two operating systems at once plus the overhead from the vitualized environment itself.

Yes, you can have two Windows OS's installed, one on the local machine and one on a virtual machine. Try VM Ware. You will need an iso of the OS. You can install as many copies of Windows on the VM and run as many VM's as your RAM will allow. So you can have Win7 local XP VM and Vista on anoter VM.

And it is a little hard to setup but doable. Just be sure to check the box for [bridge] so that your internet works of the same setup as the local machine.
