One of two options.

1) its an "iCalendar Calendar Data" from Apple inc.

2) its a random file that a programmer thought of. When i do any software i like to name some helping files with strange extensions so that people can't open them. I.E. I could name a .txt file with .mam file so that people can't open it with any text editor.

.ics files are used to store of calendar information (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICalendar). They're used whenever you export your calendar from Google Calendar, Outlook, Lotus Notes or can be used for meeting invites, restaurant bookings, flight reservations etc.

You can use https://icsconvert.appspot.com/ to convert them to .csv so you can view them in a spreadsheet.
