I love write my own music, I do play guitar, bass, ukulele and piano but I want to get into using music software to record and mix. I can use garage band but I think I might want to go a bit further than plugging my guitar into the ipad and looping drum tracks I've made, melodies and such. Plus I want to be more diverse I want to try and make dubstep, brostep, 8bit music, all different sorts of music but I'm not sure where to start. Can anyone suggest some free software for me to get my hands on to try out and see if this is something I want to do??? Thanks :D

For recording music Pro Tools is by far the best program but it sounds like you want to get into producing electronic music as well (dubstep etc.). So I'd recommend Ableton Live which is amazing for that and can also be used to record live instruments as well. It comes with loads of plugins and instruments so you can start writing and producing your own music straight away.

If you're looking for a free demo here's a free trial that lasts for 30 days (straight from Ableton Live's own website on Windows or Mac):

Another program that's got a free demo is MuLab from MuTools:

I think it is great you are ready to expand your horizons. There are several different tyoes of music software you can use. It depends on the learning curve and how savvy you are.

Music Software like:

Sonar

FL Studio

Pro tools

Beat Making Software:

DubTurbo

Sonic Producer

Dr. Drum

There are 2 websites that I know that can help you make a decision on software.
