Question:
Recovering deleted files question?
2010-03-15 14:40:00 UTC
If I were to reinstall Windows, I know this will delete all of the files on my C drive. However, there is a program that I know of that can recover deleted files.

My question is: If I used this after I'd done this, will I get the files back that were "deleted" off the system if I choose? I'd used this programme before and discovered files I'd forgotten that I had on there after I'd reinstalled Windows, but maybe my memory isn't serving me well - I just want to make sure.

Any help would be massively appreciated. Thanks if you can help :)

The first person that answered your question is partly correct.

There are file recovery programs that can find overwritten files, but they may be fragmented too far to be useful. Plus, these programs cost from $40 on up to hundreds of dollars.

Here's how it works. When you reinstalled your Windows OS, it overwrote the MBR and took away the markers for your old files. If you haven't used your computer much since the reinstall, recovery of old files are 75% - 90% depending on the recovery software (the more expensive the software, the better chance of recovery). The files are still there, but Windows cannot see or reference them.

However, the more you use the computer to save files, use the Internet or just general use of the computer (especially programs like Word), the less likely the recovery of files. There are firms that specialize in recovery, but they cost $500 or more and still cannot guarantee recovery of all files.

For the average computer user, recovery of files are almost impossible even with software recovery utilities after a reinstall.

yes it might work..depending on how big your hard drive is and how much space your windows installation and all temp files created during install takes up! Why dont you just save the files to a dvd and then install windows?

no, if the files were over written by the windows install which something was those files are lost. I would not suggest using a "recovery program" as 99% of them don't work, like your dad.

it's always better to backup your files than recovring files because files may not be recoverable since new files may overwrite space used.
