I don't think you are wanting to format and re-install - like someone else suggested. I think you just want to get rid of the crap and have it perform better.

Depending on how you have downloaded and saved things ... you might have to do a little bit of work by hand, because you would know where things were downloaded to. A keyboard shortcut, once you are inside of folders, is ... control A like apple. That selects all files and folders - inside of a folder, say My Documents or Downloads or Pictures or such. Once you have selected ALL you can unselect some things by holding down and clicking just those individual files or folders which will cause them to be un-highlighted.

If you then just press key - you will be asked if you want to put them in the Recycle Bin. If you press you will be warned that you are permanently deleting the files and folders that are currently selected (highlighted.)

You also might want to get Advanced SystemCare Free v3 - which used to be called Advanced Windows Care ... by Iobit and that will help you clean up a lot of crap.

There's another one called C Cleaner ... The Crap Cleaner. I used that one so much that I sent them a donation payment. I was using it for me, and a lot of my customers.

* Otherwise if you really are going to Format the Hard Drive and Re-install ... then make sure that you copy all of your important files to some other kind of media... either Network, CD or DVD, and External Hard Drive ... or similar.

Windows has a migration tool. For getting all of your files and settings - in case that you would need them. It gets a lot of stuff. But it is configurable ... It can take LONG TIME on a large hard drive with a lot of files. The shortcut to that in Windows XP was:

Start > Run > migwiz [OK] ... it might be the same in Vista.

Have a nice cleanup :-)

First time using a computing system?

One obvious answer would be to first, backup critical data, and then do a full reformat/reinstallation.

You use Acer, they would have given you recovery disc. You these (by restarting computer and inserting disc just before it pops the 'loading Windows' screen). It will guide through a setup, reformat and reinstall Windows as per new condition when you just bought it.

Do note, performance may not be similar to that when new. At times, these manufacturer misses out driver software in the recovery discs, so when you see lots of error messages upon complete of reinstalation, get to the Internet and run Windows Update. For some like me, we opened the casing and clean it from dusts.

Be sure to maintain performance, get reliable Firewall and AntiVirus, as well as AntiSpyware software, with registry maintainer software.

Recommended:

AntiVirus: AVG Free 8, Threat Fire

AntiSpyware: Lavasoft Ad-aware

Registry Maintainer: Advanced WindowsCare Personal
