I have a new computer and a computer that is on the fritz. I need a way to get all word documents, music files, and pictures from the bad computer to the new one. What is the best way to do this? I have heard an external hard drive, but I do not have one. I have thought of a large zip drive, but I do not have one large enough. Maybe, is there a way to connect the two or something else? Thank you!

yah you're going to have to go buy an external hard drive assuming you have a lot of files that take up a lot of space. If you do not have that many files than a small thumb drive will do. I bought a 2 gig usb thumb drive for 15 $. You can buy an 8 gig for around 30$ these days on sale.

Hopefully your computer isn't too old and has usb 2.0. I had a laptop with usb 1.0 and it took forever to get files outa there. Goodluck!

yes there is a way in windows but you will need a Direct-Parallel cable.

Here is the instructions found in Help and Support Center:

To make a direct network connection by using a Direct-Parallel cable

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from completing this procedure.

Open Network Connections.

Under Network Tasks, click Create a new connection, and then click Next.

Click Set up an advanced connection, and then click Next.

Click Connect directly to another computer, click Next, and then do one of the following:

If you want your computer to act as the host (your computer contains the information you need to access), click Host.

If you want your computer to act as the guest (your computer accesses information on another computer), click Guest, and then click Next.

In Device for this connection, click Direct Parallel (LPT1) and then click Next.

Follow the remaining instructions in the Network Connection Wizard.

Notes

To open Network Connections, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.

A direct network connection that uses a Direct-Parallel cable requires a stand-alone computer running Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

I hope it helps a bit.

I would just use a USB connection from one computer to the other. Use the good computer to open up My computer and you should see the bad computer on there. Double click on it and and copy everything you want. Then go back to your computer by backspacing and paste in a specific folder you want. This could take sometime, but at least you saved some money.

Get a flash drive, external harddrive. You could even put the harddrive from your old computer into the new computer and move the stuff from one hard drive to the other.
