Question:
Permission denied (publickey, gssapi-with-mic password)?

I use the terminal on a Mac that a professor loaned me. I use it to ssh into a server in another school. I always type in the password and have never attempted to configure it to login without me typing it in or whatever. I don't know much about command line or mac so I'm not sure what went wrong but after attempting to scp a file from the remote computer to my local computer, it asked me for my password. After typing it in (I'm sure I did it correctly) 3 times, it gave me this error:

Permission denied (publickey, gssapi-with-mic password).

I closed the terminal window and attempted to log back into the server and now I can't login because I get this same error. I have some limited access to the computer so I can't configure the ssh_configure file. I saw some posts speak about changing a setting called GSSAPIAuthentication or something to no but I can't alter this file. Is there a way to fix this problem? I mean, I caused it to happen somehow with my limited access to files, is there a way to fix this?

This means your password wasn't accepted, either because it was incorrect or because your account has been disabled. You need to contact the administrator of the machine you are trying to log into. It's possible your account was disabled by mistake. It could also mean someone else (possibly someone who broke into your account) changed the password.

The reason you get a confusing error message is because the computer doesn't actually know what the problem is. For example, for all it knows, you weren't even supposed to be entering a password because you were supposed to be logging in using a public key. All it knows is that everything it tried failed.

It's most probably a matter of authentication configuration that cannot be resolved from a remote position.

I suggest you try using SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) to access files on that server. Download an SFTP client, e.g. Cyberduck (which doesn't require you to use the Terminal):

http://cyberduck.ch/

Open the application, click on the 'Open Connection' button. In the 'open' dialog, choose 'SFTP' from the pull-down menu, type in the server address and the SSH port number you were given (default port number for SSH is 22). Also type in username and password, then click on connect.

If this doesn't work, you will have to contact the server admin to solve the problem.
