I don't think that the users are to be blamed as much as the advertisers. Many companies will try anything and everything to make their marketing campaigns successful, even if that means putting down their competitors. The fact that people are actually taking sides and vehemently arguing about the subject does seem to get quite out of hand. It is a shame that there are people who actually buy into those Mac commercials without thoroughly thinking about the reasons why Macs may or may not be better than Windows.

Personally, I think Macs are fine, but I prefer using XP and Ubuntu.

os preference is personal preference. there are people like me that used to love windows, now we cant stand it. i switched to linux. other people switched to mac

edit: normally i dont give a crud about people that bash os's... because most of the time they are dead on. but your answers to the guy a couple answers down show nothing but arrogance so here's my spill on this

1. macs cant play any good video games

actually they can.... they are just waiting for people to write the games for them.... macs are much more efficient at processing than windows so dont need as high specs to do the same thing

2. macs are meant for people who don't know how to use a computer

my job is a windows network admin..... at home i have a linux server.... occasionally i have to legally hack one of the machines on my network because windows screwed up.... i think i do know how to use a computer

3. The only reason there are no viruses is because hackers are like "**** this, Only like two percent of people who own a computer is rich enough to buy one of these, why waste time making a virus

actually its 5.12%. http://marketshare.hitslink.com/os-market-share.aspx?qprid=9. but osx is built on top of unix. unix is one of the most secure os's ever created, long before windows/dos ever came around. much of the security that is being added to windows is based on unix

4. NO personilization

or maybe you just dont know how

5. (going back to 3's point) the firewall isn't any better, a pc will do just as well if your not looking up **** on the internet all the time without any firewall's on.

you sure? cause your router is very likely running unix.... and has its own firewall running to protect your network. windows firewall dont do crap

6. Mac's are always going to be defensive because they don't want to admit that they bought the mac because they have no self decesion and don't take there pills for A.D.D. because all they bought it for was the shiny apple that lights up when they're simplistic minds finally found the power button (not saying that it''s hard to find).

actually that would be why i bought my nice shiney LED flash light.... my future mac is going to be so that i can completely abandon windows when im at home because im tired of fighting with a machine that dont work.... also the reason half my home network runs linux

7. DONT GET ME WRONG. I don't disrespect all Mac users, I disrespect the ones who believe its soooo much better than pc.

which is most of them because most of them use it to get away from pc in the first place... because they cant stand the problems pc has

8. SNOW LEOPARD BARELY WORKS!

vista DONT work!!! who you trying to kid?

9. Today I was told, (by a mac) "If you haven''t lost thousands of files using a pc, then your to young."my response?

"If you haven't realized that you bought an overpriced computer for the brand name, then your waaay to old."

my response: if your defending a monopoly for the sole fact that they are a monopoly that you've always used (which is the root of the only legitimate stuff you've put on here), you got too much free time

10. This whole entire Mac thing is just temporary and is just teaching people to not judge a book by its cover

actually the mac operating systems have been around longer than windows. and at the rate ms is going, mac will still be around after windows. and vista tought the computer world not to judge a book by its cover, or to judge the os by its eye candy

...., because when you open it your going to find Steve Jobs saying, we made a single click mouse because it's harder to distinguish left and right, and people would rather slow everything down by running over to the control key (it should just be called, the "you're now owned by apple" key) and then left click. That's conveinent.

actually, even when im in windows/linux my fingers are still in close proximity to the control key. not to mention that is only mac branded mice, macs do work with pc mice, which contain the right click button

but here's an idea.... whenever a user tries to do anything, we are going to ask them if they are sure they want to do the very thing they just intentionally clicked on..... maybe even several times for the same task.... that's conveinent

Are you aware that you never asked a question?

You don't have to like Mac's. I have a pc and would never consider buying a Mac - but that doesn't make me better or more 'right' than someone who chooses a Mac. It's just personal preference and I think you're getting yourself all worked up over nothing.

Any thoughts on how to straighten out the problems we're having in our BIG world today? Lighten up already.

A Mac isn't for everyone. I have a Mac, a Windows PC (XP) and W7 PC and several Linux machines as well. Each is different and I use each for different reasons. Overall, my Mac beats the others hands down for what I use it for and what it is designed to do. Then again, I can say that of my Linux and Windows PC's as well. Try to see the bigger picture and learn as much as you can about all of them, you'll be better off and a lot more technically savvy ;-)
2009-12-03 04:57:29 UTC
i agree with a few of your points... but mac is an ADVANCED os... it's more terminal based than windows, which is all clicky clicky.

it IS better than windows; it's just that noobs all use windows 'cause everyone makes stuff for it and not for mac.

and you only have half of the right reason for no viruses. mac is based on the UNIX operating system, really hard to crack.

and it's true about the losing files on PC part, except that windows is starting to copy linux more and more in its file indexing, getting better and better. a Mac's file indexing is pretty good by windows standards.

What completely uninformed swill. Allow me to elaborate...

1. Can't play AS MANY games, at least in OS X. Believe it or not kiddo, serious gamers are a niche market. Most people don't give a crap about playing Crysis on high settings. Wanna play some games? Partition your drive with Boot Camp and install Windows.

2. Right. I guess all those people doing serious multimedia on Macs the world over are just clueless. Better tell the developers, too. And the schools and universities.

3. A common misconception from idiots like you. Part of it is lower marketshare, yes (and it's much closer to 10% if you look at the numbers), but part of it is a Unix core with actual permissions, unlike the security swiss cheese that was XP. Oh, MS has improved their security on many fronts, but there is almost zero malware out there for OS X. You also have to remember that there were numerous malicious viruses for OS 9 and earlier. Barely any in OS X, even though it has more marketshare. About the only malicious stuff in the wild is a few install and authenticate pieces of malware. Your argument is completely invalid.

4. Just because you're too stupid to figure out how doesn't mean you can't.

5. You still need to delouse a Windows box periodically even if you're careful. Crap happens. That's the way it is.

6. Complete and utter **** from a truly feeble mind.

7. Funny, question 6 says otherwise. So do the rest of your blanket statements.

8. It works a shitload better than Vista and better than 7. You pulled this completely out of your *** and you know it.

9. And you likely are too young. Then again, any computer can have a hard drive failure.

10. Yes, temporary for the past 25 years. Macs have had right click capabilities for several years now, built right in. The only people who are still regurgitating that tired argument are those who know nothing. Then again, I wouldn't expect a moron like you to actually learn about the thing you're bashing.

In short, you are just another ill-informed retard. There are legitimate reasons to dislike the Mac platform. Unfortunately, your mind is way too small to grasp any of them. And if you think Mac users are stupid, just take a look at most of the questions here. Some of the dumbest people in the world post on Yahoo Answers, and what do most questions concern? Windows. Using your warped logic, I could try to say that WIndows has the most retards (you included), but that wouldn't necessarily be true. Come back when you've passed puberty, kiddo.

As for folks in general, use what you want to use. I use OS X and Windows 7, although I prefer OS X. I actually don't use a Mac per se. I'm running from a Hackintosh. I'm not going to slam people for using Windows, Linux, etc unless they're total douches about it. Why don't we all just use the OS we like and be happy with it?

Oh boy, more crap!

"1. You pulled THAT out of your *** and YOU know it, you just threw in a few fancy words so people would agree with you."

Translation: My vocabulary is stunted, so I'll just accuse the other guy of using "fancy words" because I can't. I also have a bachelor's degree in Information Technology and Administrative Management, numerous certifications, and years of experience in the field. What are you qualifications, putz? You can build your own computer? Come back when you can configure a managed network. Hardcore gamers a small part of the overall market. You think they play Left 4 Dead all day on corporate networks? How about grandma or even mom and dad?

"2. And I'm pretty much right about the personilization, not much you can do with a mac, don't think I'm retarded, almost everyone I know uses a mac, and I've used them ALOT."

Again, just because you don't know how doesn't mean that it can't be done. Using them "alot" (which isn't even a word) means nothing. It's obvious that you don't like them and have very little knowledge in how they work, so one wouldn't expect you to know the ins and outs of how to customize. The thing is, you shouldn't act like you do.

"3. Anything you wanna mod on them is very hard, due to the fact that just like every other apple product, the battery and everything else doesn't come out on purpose, you have to MAKE it come out, voiding your warranty."

Don't come out on purpose? You have to MAKE it come out? Use your words, dude. For one, that is on the newest portables. The battery of the new Macbooks, for instance, have a whopping two screws holding it down. So hard, and Apple really has no way of knowing if you removed it or not. Also, all of their current laptops (minus the Air, for obvious reasons) have an easily accessible hard drive and RAM bay. Whoops, I guess you can't upgrade those. Apple also doesn't make a tower system that's as easily upgraded as any other tower, oh no. Believe it or not, most people do very little in the way of upgrades, and please don't tell me that I pulled that out of my ***. I work in the damned industry. Most people are largely clueless regardless of the platform they use and don't care as long as the computer works.

"4. I'm entitled to my opinion. But I don't care, because at least you TRIED to put up an argument."

I TRIED? That's more than you did, because you failed before you even got out of the gate. Your opinion would be that you don't like Macs. You're entitled to that, sure. However, when your opinion is based on complete ignorance and stupidity, then people tend to laugh at you.

macs suck

only people that don't know how to use a dam computer and maintain it and have no brain cells uses macs.

PC rules!!!!!!!!!!!

you people are stupid if you don't know how to use windows...

Try to sound less angry.. And calmly state the facts.. I understand the fustration with those who say "Mac is better" when it is not..

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support

Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use a subset of PC hardware. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

Don't believe the lies that Macs are better than PCs at graphics/animation.. Dreamworks Animation http://www.dreamworksanimation.com/ under studio click on Technology of Animation, an independent film maker I know uses PCs, a graphic artist I used to know uses PCs also.

A number of PCs can also run OS X (Mac OS) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=os+x+on+pc&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&oq=os+x+on+ as well just that Apple makes it illegal in order to get Market share.. The reason why Mac can run native Windows is because it is using a subset of PC hardware,

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

SECURITY

Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008, and within 10 seconds in 2009. In 2008, Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux. In 2009 Windows 7 fell shortly after the Mac but Linux was unscathed.

Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.

Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Microsoft-Finds-Irony-in-Mac-OS-X-Getting-Hacked-Before-Vista-SP1-82135.shtml

QUALITY/PROBLEMS

Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Deleting your Data (Snow Leopard), Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.

With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.

IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

VIRUSES

Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

ADVANTAGES WINDOWS :

Aprox 90% of the market is Windows and most PCs have windows already pre-installed.

1) Some websites require Internet Explorer, to run IE on Mac you really get ies4osx which is the Windows version of IE running really buggy and illegal if you don't have a legitimate copy of Windows.

2) Supports more devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).

3) More business software/games

4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.

5) Used by businesses.

ADVANTAGES LINUX :

1) FREE (most versions are)

2) Install software by either 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)

2) Like the Mac OS X effects? go yahoo/google COMPIZ FUSION which can do any cool effect a Mac can do and many ore....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3gkX9HDfEE (there is no flickering when you use it like on the video, not sure why the person has the flicker)

3) Mac OS X Doc? google/yahoo Avant Window Navigator.Cairo Dock, http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3rf5q_cairo-dock-mac-os-x-leopard-dock-on_tech

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0hzi22g2DE

4) It is FASTER/MORE SECURE to surf on the internet

5) Some Windows programs work with Wnehq/Crossover (also avail on Mac, but why pay $$$)

PRICE

A similar equipped PC is much cheaper to purchase than Mac. Lets use Dell (but you can compare with another PC Brand if you like)

**(DESKTOP)

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

Dell XPS8000: ($1018)

CPU: I-7 2.8GHZ (SUPERIOR ) RANK 12= http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7+860+%40+2.80GHz

The Mac Mini since it has no monitor, keyboard, mouse, very skimpy on options and setup and is not the best deal... The IMac is better price than the Mac Mini.
