The explanation is long. Read first and then decide if you want to do it:
Use with care:
STEP 1: ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLES
• Click START button > CONTROL PANEL > SYSTEM AND MAINTENANCE > SYSTEM
(Windows xp classic view: Click START button > CONTROL PANEL > SYSTEM)
• Select the ADVANCED tab
• Click the ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES at the bottom
Under USER VARIABLES FOR your-user-id the TMP and TEMP environmental settings appear under VARIABLE column. Write down the VALUE associated to each variable. This value is the location of the folder.
CASE 1 TMP or TEMP variable is listed
• Open Windows Explorer (right-clict START button and select EXPLORE) and locate the location of the TEMP and TMP folder (the values you wrote down before)
• Try to clean the TEMP folder.
Close any program and then you can delete any .tmp files that are not currently in use (modify date earlier than the current date)
TIP: You can use CCLEANER to clean your temp files and more:

• Right-click the folder and select PROPERTIES, verify that that you have read/write permission to this folder (try to open a file and save a file)

CASE 2:
TMP or TEMP variable is not listed then you have to define them:
Using TEMP as example
(if TMP is not listed, do the following steps using TMP instead of TEMP)
• Click the NEW button, this will open the NEW USER VARIABLE dialog box
• In the VARIABLE NAME BOX, type TEMP.
• In the VARIABLE VALUE BOX type C:\TEMP (or any other valid path and folder name).
• Click SET or OK to add the value to the USER VARIABLES FOR your-user-id.
• Click OK and close all the open dialog box.
• Open Windows Explorer (right-click START button and select EXPLORE)
• Check that C:\TEMP exist, if it does not exist then create the TEMP folder in that location.
• Verify that drive C:\ has at least 50MB of free space if not you MUST clean your disk to free space.

STEP 2: REPAIR YOUR WORD INSTALLATION
WORD 2003:
If STEP 1 failed then
From the menu bar select HELP > DETECT AND REPAIR
WORD 2007
• Click the OFFICE button
• Click WORD OPTIONS (at the bottom)
• From the right pane select RESOURCES and then click DIAGNOSE
WORD 2010:
Use the next option

STEP 3: REPAIR WORD IN MAINTENANCE MODE
If STEP 2 failed then use control panel to repair your word:
WINDOWS XP:
Click START > CONTROL PANEL
WINDOWS VISTA/7
Click START, and then type ADD REMOVE.
• Click ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS
• On the left pane click CHANGE OR REMOVE PROGRAMS
• Locate and click the version of Microsoft Office (Microsoft Office Word) with the problem
• Click Change
• Click REPAIR and then click CONTINUE or NEXT

STEP 4: REINSTALL WORD
If STEP 3 failed then
Follow the steps given for STEP 3, but select REINSTALL instead of REPAIR
