Windows 7 Question: I had trouble accessing files on my external drive. So, I messed with the file permissions settings. Now, the file directory does not show a single file. Before they showed the files but I could not access them ("file permission error"). The external drive still shows “83G of 287GB.” So, the files still should be there. How do I get my files to show back up?

Not sure if this is the issue, but perhaps you have an option un-ticked in the 'Folder options viw' that shouldn't be?

Click the start menu (Flag at the bottom right), Click 'Control panel', on the right side, click 'Appearance and Personalization'. Near the bottom, click the 'Folder Options' link and a window should open, make sure the 'Show all folders' under the 'Navigation pane' is selected. Out of the 3 tabs near the top of that window, click the 'View' tab. Near the bottom of the 'View' page, there should be a button labeled 'Restore Defaults', Click this and see if that fixes your problem.

Hope this helps!

If you want to show up the files, do the following:

1. Head to folder options in control panel and hit the View tab

2. Tick on 'show hidden files and folders'

This should show up your files now. If you still can't, you might want to try this..

3. After ticking 'show hidden files and folder' look for 'hide operating system files' and untick it..

look up now.... you must see them now...

And as for permission, I'm afraid you might have to do it individually... unless someone else tells you a way.. do the following:

1. Right click the file and hit properties.

2. Hit the Security tab

3. Below the 'Group or user name' section you'd see an edit button, hit it..

4. On the next window they'd give, hit the Add button

5. On the next window they'd show up, type 'Everyone' or simply 'e' and press enter

6. You should probably see a new user now by the name Everyone at Group or user name section, check below, you should see 'permissions for everyone' section. check on full control and hit enter..

You should be able to access your file now....

Hope this helps.. :)
