IP addresses and finding locations using them?

hi guys :)

right... basically..my mate's lost his mind and left home..to cut a long story short, i need to track the original IP address from an email from a friend of mine. thing is, when you open the email header and check the IP address in the "recieved from:" tab, the IP address shows the location of the service provider rather than the computer that the email was originally sent from...

for example...if i click on the header options in an email i have in my yahoo account, and click full view, i get a tonne of information there, as well as an IP address, which i check using www.find-ip-address.org. and it shows me a location in ireland, with Yahoo Systems ..etc

Is there any way of tracking the original IP address of which i can track the location of the computer?? and is there any software i need? and if so, where can i get it?

oh and one more quicky...does anyone know how to show the IP address of the emails in hotmail emails?..thanx :) and PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!! ANY information you can give me on this would be awesome :) cheers

Not everyone has their own ip, in fact most do not. Getting the service provider is about as good as you can get, assuming he used the email of his service provider and not another one. Anyway, most service providers will lump his ip in with other customers, and the best you will get is the city limits, not an address. His provider probably knows where he is, but for that you need a search warrant, etc



As for web mail, unless they offer to show you the full header and I do not know if they do or not, then you are out of luck.
