Question:
Windows XP updates = 100% CPU Usage? Help please.?

All Windows XP updates give me 100% CPU usage. No matter what the update is... ex: framework or SP3. My PC quickly goes to 100% CPU usage after it is installed. What could possibly be the problem?

I have looked in the control panel as to what can be eating up my usage... but everything seems normal at 0% with the exception of Idle System.

The only way to get 0-5% usage is to reformat my pc. I've tried repairing and hot fixes.

My current Windows XP version is Service Pack 2
(Build Service Pack 22600)

System info:
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+
2.20 GHz Performance Rated at 3.20 GHz
2.0GB RAM
139.7 GB of free Disk Space

Ask for anymore additional information if needed... thanks in advance.

I have the same processor with only 512 MB of Ram (1/4 of yours) and I do not have this problem (although I wish I had more RAM..you have plenty so that is not the problem). I assume you have and use antiviral software. I would try the following: Disk CleanUp..start>control panel>performance & maintenance>free up space on your hard drive.

Then go back to start>my computer>local disk C (which is your hardrive)>right click >properties>defragment now. When defragmentation is complete, come back to properties>error checking>check off both areas and start. Follow prompts. This part will take some time. This should clean/organize your system. I would also do a virus check on your complete system. Download/run free registry window repair tool. If you do not get automatic window updates then log into windows update and run that to ensure the latest updates. If this does not solve the problem, then use system restore to restore windows back to a time when you DID NOT have this problem.

theres something called native command. on most newer hard drives this makes it to where in time it will memorize where some of your common files used are stored if theres new files then it doesn't know where they are yet. but the other guy is right try to defrag it that always helps just go to start button and search your programs for disk defrag.

Its a virus alright Im guessing. I had the same problem. Probably BRONTOK. It hides. Now go to task manager by clickin ctrl+alt+delete at the same time. click "l" to go to "lsass.exe" if its the coreect one it will be appx "00" under the heading "CPU" and if itsa virus it will be with a capital "i" which looks like an "L" as in "Isass.exe". See there is no difference in the two. It will also be usoing alot of the cpu like "34" + or maybe "99" straight!! Check this out. In a normally performing system..the "System idle process" ha "99" under the "CPU" heading.

have you installed many software's or few but it is a huge task then all you need to uninstall and defragment then install and defragment and obey what ever it asks to perform
