As I know, iMovie support MOV and MP4 files.

1. Make sure that your AVI movies is playable on a AVI player.

2. Make sure that the MOV files` video codec as h264

3. Try another software to convert your AVI files to MOV or MP4 with h.264 video codec. I recommend you this one: http://www.aimersoft.com/video-converter.html#161

When using iMovie it could be tricky as Apple has opened the many different file formats out there for iMovie so from Apple and a few other sites here is some info on the supported files I am giving you the following list as I do not what the .Mov file info your importing

The .Avi what is the format? and the export of the .Mov what was the settings that you used? If you want hit me with an email or you could read up on the file formats.

iMovie only supports the MOV movie file whose video codec is DV, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, or AIC. If a .mov video contains an incompatible video codec, the file will either not import into iMovie or will exhibit playback issues after import. In this case, you may need to convert the video file to iMovie compatible video format. I always use Bigasoft iMovie Converter to convert iMovie unfriendly video format to iMovie supported MPEG-4. You can download a copy to evaluate it.
