Is this really a critical update? Do i need to download it. It seems to either freeze when trying to download update or is just extremely slow. If it is important I do this update is there anyway to make it quicker?

I have Vista home premium with DSL

.net framework is required by some of the softwares to install. It is necessary to have an updated version of .net framework to install latest softwares.

you can get the offline .net installer on the internet. It will install quickly but the downloading file size increases.

well it all depends how "critical" it is. Windows OS's come with .net framework. Its needed to run a multitude of application soft-wares properly. If you are not having trouble running any softwares and always having trouble updating to the newest version of frameworks and everything is running fine then leave it be. I had to actually download an older version of .net framework (vers 1.1) on my PC running Windows 7 because I'm using an older program that requires framework 1.1 and I guess up to a certain extent newer versions aren't fully backwards compatible with 1.1 and earlier. I think .net framework works very in depth like with windows registry. Makes since because navigate to (in windows 7 at least) computer / C: / Windows / inf / .net framework theres an .ini file. I currently have version: 1.0 1.1 2.0 3.0 3.5 and 3.0 and 3.5 made for the 64 bit systems.. In all honestly, you can live without updates, besides security updates I personally discourage updates (even if most people disagree with me on that). I don't see why your computer should have any difficulty updating something that Windows considers a critical update. For the mostpart framework should allow your computer to run a little smoother and patch up know security vunerabilities.

Ill assume you just press the update button? I would try to go about it i different way. Google search .net framework update and see what comes up. im sure you could navigate to a domain under the windows website that may or may not (worth a shot if you wanna invest some time in it) allow you to properly get the version you need. But my real question here is: how old is your computer?

Basic answer: you dont Need it, you should get it. Try downloading it manually, there's no harm if you do it that way. It may not update it in the same manner, but it will still work properly. Also: it is Windows alerts telling you about this update right? Also try closing out all unused applications when you do it next time, you may just be giving your computer a little more than it wants to handle. If you are so determined to do it there are ways. you can compleetly destroy your .net framework files and folders and just download 3.5 SP1 (full package) fresh, but I personally wouldn't do that.

I hope you find a solution. Im sure there are tons of people with the same problem.. infact:

Many ISV's, enterprises and Microsoft product teams are successfully building on the new features Windows Workflow Foundation (WF), Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and Windows CardSpace in the .NET Framework 3.0.

Microsoft plans to continue to invest in the .NET Framework developer platform and in support of existing users the .NET Framework 3.5 has a minimal number of breaking changes. So that existing applications built for .NET Framework 2.0 or .NET Framework 3.0 should continue to run without requiring changes.

The .NET Framework 3.5 adds new features in several major technology areas; including:

· Deep integration of Language Integrated Query (LINQ) and data awareness

· ASP.NET AJAX for quickly creating more efficient, more interactive and highly-personalized Web experiences that work across all the most popular browsers

· New web protocol support for building WCF services including AJAX, JSON, REST, POX, RSS, ATOM and several new WS-* standards

· Full tooling support for WF, WCF and WPF including the new workflow-enabled services technology

· New classes in the base class library (BCL) for the .NET Framework 3.5 address the most common customer requests.

.NET Framework 3.5 is planned to release at the end of 2007 and will ship with Visual Studio code name "Orcas" and will also continue to be available for separate download from MSDN.

The Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 (which is formerly known as WinFX), is the new managed code programming model for Windows. It combines the power of the .NET Framework 2.0 with new technologies for building applications that have visually compelling user experiences, seamless communication across technology boundaries, and the ability to support a wide range of business processes.
