Im a web designer and a photographer, my computer has been struggling with the amount of data i have on it (well over 1TB!) and i like to keep all my data since you never know when you may need it (or someone may want to buy some photos) - So i've just bought myself a file server, and im wondering which OS is best to install on it? All it's going to be doing, is sitting there. When i want something archived, i turn it on, archive and shut it down and vice versa when i need to grab something from the archive.

Does anyone know which OS would be best (hopefuly not Linux!) for a file server? I havent a clue what the difference is between Windows XP and Windows Server Edition

Buddy you should go with OpenSolaris (a freeware and works on cross-plateform - Solaris based) or you can choose ubantu (Linux based). Both are nice and easy to use with beautiful GUI features.

Windows Server 2008 is probably best as you can even pull stuff out of storage with a DOS client. Linux with Apache server would be useful for testing websites so perhaps have a dual boot system with W2K8 Server as the lion's share of the drive and a small Linux partition.
