No, It does not come with Word processing programs, but they are available (Pages, Office, StarOffice, OpenOffice)

Yes, it is compatible with MSN messenger.

Macs come with Safari out of the box, but you can install Firefox or one of the many other browsers available.

Yes, all Macs (except the Macbook Air) come with disc drives

and

Yes, all Macs have at least 2 USB ports (except the Air which has only 1)

i just bought a mac. I have open office which is compatible with microsoft office which means I can take work stuff home. You can buy ms office if you want. I have both skype and the yahoo messenger (talks to ms messenger) running on it. I like the default mail and internet programs but you can load thunderbird/firefox or whatever. I also have RDP which allows me to log onto and use Windows computers. Despite what you might hear, you can run games on a mac - I play world of warcraft. It has usb, firewire, ethernet, bluetooth, wireless, and a dvd. I use The Gimp which is a photoshop alternative. Itunes and VLC cover films and music. Lets not forget the beautiful and intuitive osx operating system. Oh and if you can't live without windows then you can install it alongside of osx, or create a virtual pc (with virtualbox) to install it in. They are expensive but that doesn't mean that they are overpriced. If you get one you will love it and all your mates WILL be jealous. Any doubts - check it out on the apple.com.

They typically have all of the above or are able to have all of the above...

-You can get word for Mac or Office for Mac

-your web browser is probably going to be Safari

-They typically have at least one disc drive

-They have at least 2 but normally 4 usb ports

I personally would buy a PC simply because of the compatibility aspect of a PC vs a Mac. While macs are definitely getting more popular, they still haven't quite reached the level of acceptance that would help them integrate into a business atmosphere. They are also normally more expensive then their PC counterpart. Most software packages are designed for PC and have to be significantly retooled for MAC compatibility. A lot of companies just don't bother doing that, preferring to stick to the PC market.

Good move, join the club. A Mac comes more complete than a PC.

What ever app is missing you can download. If you get an Intel Mac you can even load the horrible Win OS (better on a partition)

- No, but a free application called "TextEdit" - like Windows's "Notepad". iWork '09 is £69, and Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac is available.

- Yes, it's called Microsoft Messenger for Mac - however it doesn't support webcam, winks, nudges.

- Safari, Mozilla Firefox are compatible browsers.

- Yes, they have disc drives, a "Combo Drive" can read CDs/DVDs and burn CDs. A "Superdrive" can read CDs/DVDs and burn CDs/DVDs.

- They have 2 or more USB ports.

Hope I helped you ;)
