windows 8 not downloading updates?

The overall goal is to update to windows 8.1, I am on 8.0 now.

In many places, I read that its recommended to make sure the windows updates are current before transitioning to 8.1. So here I am in PC Settings - Windows Update and I check for updates. It comes back and tells me that I have 92 important updates that total a measly 337.6 mb. This is good so far, so I click install and a download bar appears.

Nothing ever happens from here, the bar never fills and nothing changes. I end up canceling and resort to asking you guys what the problem could be. I figured I can just go to 8.1 but this should still be working.

I obviously have internet connection, windows support site list this as one of the possible troubleshoot problems. I can't believe they even need to ask.

Go to Control Panel >Troubleshooting and under System and Security click Fix Problems with Windows Updtes and run the Troubleshooter it will prob run once and then say something like try in administer mode or something Run it again and it will prob then fix windows update database and then try your updates.

If you are having trouble downloading a 'measly' 337.6mb, I wouldn't even try W8.1 as that download is 3.6GB!
