I have a gmail account as well, and I'd say about 99% of the spam that hits me makes it into the spam box.

Nothing's perfect, my friend. If your experience is worse than mine, then either you are getting a ton of spam, or you need to start marking the messages as spam that make it into your inbox. That helps improve the filter that's watching out for you. Google's gmail by far has the best spam filter of any free online email account I've used or heard about.

Realize that the real problem here might be you! You need to take more care when using your email address online. Keep it hidden from spammers as much as possible. Don't use your "primary" email address when registering at websites or when forwarding funny jokes in emails to your friends. That crap gets forwarded around from person to person and eventually hits a spammer who collects all the email addresses from it.

gmail is not 100% spam proof although it filters a lot of it out and i feel they are doing a good job at it. in case some spams still seeps thru, just select that spam email and mark it as spam so that gmail can do a better job at catching these guys.
