I wouldn't even bother using it. You can probably scrounge a newer computer from someone you know for free.

If its an old computer, I wouldn't bother upgrading at all. It's either a new computer, or stay with Windows 98 / get Windows XP.

It all depends on how much RAM you have. If you have at least 512MB, then Windows XP will work--IF you can get it. I don't know that you can buy Windows XP anymore. Otherwise, you could use Ubuntu: http://ubuntu.com

If you have at least 384MB, then XUbuntu may be your best option: http://www.xubuntu.org/

If you have less than 384MB, then you'll have to resort to a mini Linux. Simple Linux will probably be the easiest for you to install: http://www.simplelinuxdistro.co.cc/

You can upgrade to XP but i wouldnt try higher. processor speed and harddrive size and RAM are major consideerations.

For the record, you can get a 1 GB processor PC with a 20 GB harddrive for less than $100 if the guy isn't a total rip off artist. Also, you should have at least 512 MB of RAM for most things these days. THe problem you encounter often if flashplayer sites slowing your PC way down.

look you did not specify your computer details so how are we suppose to know if you comp can handle XP. we could say install XP because it is cheap but that if your comp does not supports it, it would work slow than you would have to downgrade. i would advise you to check the specification on windows XP OS and decide what are you going to do it it supports it or not. if it does not supports it I wouldn't bother upgrading at all. It's either a new computer, or stay with Windows 98 / get Windows XP.

If it is that old you should not consider upgrading it, unless you are also prepared to upgrade the memory as well.

But after investing in the new operating system and the new memory you are 1/2 way to paying the amount you would pay for a new or refurbished system that would perform multiple times faster.

So my personal recommendation is that you leave that system alone and start saving up for a new/refurbished one that is only a generation or 2 old. You should be able to get a decent one for about $200-$300. Take into account buying a new windows XP license would be about $100 alone + additional memory requirements ... it makes no sense to invest any more in your old system.

Both Vista and W7 require at least 1Gb of memory and 20Gb of HD space. The processor should be at least 1GHz in speed. As your system is over 12 years old I really think the costs of upgrading would be prohibitive and the only way forward would be to purchase a new system. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Upgrade to Windows XP. It's a little old but works fine and is plenty cheap.

You can only upgrade to Windows XP, but only if your PC is at least:

• Windows XP PRO http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sysreqs/pro.mspx

• Windows XP Home http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sysreqs/home.mspx

Because your PC is so old, you cannot upgrade to windows VISTA or 7. Remember as time passes on, you wont be able to find software for your computer. Think about buying a new one, you could find very good prices or create a saving account to acquire you PC.
