If you're new to linux you'll want to go with Ubuntu first. It's based on Debian but installing and getting to work faster are easier with Ubuntu.

The best thing about linux is that you have options and can "try before you buy" in the sense that you can download live-CDs for most distributions. You can boot from the CD and make sure everything works with your hardware before you install anything.

I use Ubuntu, but by all means, check out the other distributions and see what's available. In the end, do what's right for you.

Ubuntu is based on Debian.

You could say that Ubuntu is Debian which is polished and tweaked to be suitable for a regular desktop user. So Ubuntu is more user-friendly than Debian, Ubuntu provides you with the opportunity to easily install software that is not so open source (Debian installs only absolutely free and open source software by default, I believe), Ubuntu provides some extra software repositories as well, I think.

If I were you, I would go for Linux Mint. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu (which is based on Debian). Mint is even more polished than Ubuntu - it has Java and certain audio and video codecs preinstalled, which in Ubuntu you have to install yourself.

If your going to switch to Linux Please Please don't go with Ubuntu, Go for a Linux community distribution they work out of the box, and far better than Ubuntu, Ubuntu is a commercial distribution that's why it is advertised so much.and well known, That does not mean it's the best,

I would advise you to check these distributions out

Linux Mint 9 Main edition

Sabayon 5.3

Ultimate Edition 2.7

Pardus > Designed and developed by the university of Turkey If you download this be careful to install the english version (brilliant distribution)

Mandriva

PCLinuxOS

download from here

Ubuntu is Debian with Ubuntu additions. Ubuntu is a little more newbie-friendly than Debian.
