recommended system requirements for xp?

If your system does meet the system requirements you must still see if all of your hardware has available drivers for XP to run. Very few times you will find some hardware does not have a supported driver available to run XP.

Microsoft is a little slow to update their take on the minimum system requirements for XP. You need more like 256MB of ram and more like 10GB hard drive minimum to successfully run XP today. By the time you get XP and all of your programs installed you need these increases to be effective. You will find that after you get these installed you will have about 2.5GB installed.

I have a LOT of programs installed on my computer and I also have 7 hard drives and 4 of these have program files on them. I use C: drive for very little of my program files and it has 20GB installed on it using XP Pro SP3.

err.... just to add to the confusion (G)

It depends what service pack, and also what software you plan to run on it.

the recommended system requirements (above) that came out apply to the OS but they don't apply to the state of current software which is generally more system demanding than the min specs for the OS.

This means it may be worth looking into the requirements of the specific applications you want to run rather than just the min requirements for xp.

There are a lot of low-profile (low ram/cpu usage) applications available that work as fine alternatives to 'mainstream' applications like firefox, msoffice, IE, etc etc.

tinyapps.com a good place to check out if u r interested in this.

Also, you can get very good mileage out of an older machine by using some of the leaner Linux distros designed for this purpose, as an alternatice or dual boot with xp. xubuntu, puppy and 'damn small', all good options in this regard.

Hope this helps.

buying a new pc?

Personally, no sempron or celeron cpu for me. Athlons or Pentiums/core2 are ok.

Minimum 1 GB RAM. DDR2 667 or 800MHz. Dual channel better.

Get a good mother board, don't stinge on this. Very important! Recommend Asus, Gigabyte or Intel motherboards.

Check out how I chose a system for running Vista.

Graphic cards, depends what you want out of your system. If you need budget and low cost, integrated graphic chipset would be good. Playing lots of games or doing heavy graphic editing? Better buy a separate PCI-ex graphic card. NVidia or ATI chipset would be good. Get about at least 256 to 512MB of graphic memory if you can afford it.

Minimum 40GB HDD space, using SATA2. If you have lots of data like MP3, photos, and other loads of media junk, go for 160GB or more. Not much price difference anyway, so may as well go for bigger HDD.

And of course don't forget your DVD-ROM.
