My internet has gone all screwy, can you help me fix it?

So my internet on my desktop computer has gone completely crazy all at once and I can't figure out what's going on. I can visit whatever websites I want without problem, but when I try to sign into a website (like yahoo or facebook) I get this message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" When I click more information it says this:
This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including
-internet connectivity has been lost
-the website is temporarily unavailable
-the domain name server (DNS) is not reachable
-the domain name server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain
-there might be a typing error in the address
-if this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click tools, click internet options, click advanced, and check to be sure the SSl and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.

When I diagnose the problem, it says that "windows cannot connect to the internet using HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP. This is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer"

I tried disabling my firewall and nothing happened.

Also, I cannot update my iTunes version, therefore I can't fix my ipod which has also gotten screwed up.

I tried updating my windows and it wouldn't let me.

My wireless internet has not been affected because i'm doing this on my laptop.

I don't know much about computers but I know something is messed up and I have no idea how to fix it. Please help me.

I have a co-worker who has the same problem. I suggested several things of which none worked. He was going to reinstall OS. (Drastic measure, I know). I'll check with him to see if he solved the problem with out having to reinstall OS. I'm on vacation, however, and won't see him again until next tues. So, If this is still posted, I will update unless someone else here has a fix.

Good luck.

Restart the PC.

If that doesn't work, turn off the modem, router, PC.

Turn on the modem, wait few minutes until most lights are up.

Turn on the router, wait few minutes until most lights are up.

Turn on the PC.

This will fix most internet connection problems most of the time.
