Why doesnt my dvd drive play cds?
ive just brought a dell studio xps desktop, and it came with a dvd rw drive. i presumed that this plays cds and so i didnt bother buying an extra cd drive. problem is, ive just put in a cd (music) and it isnt working.

1. ive tried 5+ cds, none work.
2. ive tried disabling and enabling.
3. ive downloaded the latest drivers.

it plays dvds, but when i put a cd in it doesnt even load or make a sound, its as if ive put nothing in and just closed the tray... why is this?

I had the same problem once and the only solution I had found was this...you must go into you control panel then system then device manager...at that point you will have to uninstall the dvd drive from you pc...reboot system them go back to device manager and reinstall it.......then reboot the second time...this should fix the problem.....you may have to do it a couple times ...i had a problem with reading my dvd and this worked for me....you might wanna think about check for a bios update as well.

If you can’t find the right CD / DVD drivers manually I would recommend just getting a software program that can do it for you. There is a program I use which will find drivers for just about all hardware devices. The best part is it takes a snapshot of your system specifications and matches the right driver to go with it. Perform a free driver scan at:

First issues first i'd attempt to pass to my pc and notice if the Disc is considered there. If not they attempt ejecting and putting the disc back in. that's a danger that your DVD rigidity would be going undesirable. It does take place sometimes.
