I have tried to download an old movie that I have seen many times as a torrent and when I do this pops up.

Is this standard for downloading all torrent files or just the movies?
Is it safe to do so?
I have read the "direct download" is the best?

Basically it is just saying that you need to own the copyright on the content to upload. It can get sketchy to upload stuff anywhere that you don't own the copyright for.

As for downloading same thing. Except the torrent is most likely safer. The direct download will trace you downloading it whereas the torrent, if it is a good site, will randomize the IP addresses with a list that they have so that you actual IP address cannot be found.

This could technically get anyone whether they download the torrent or not because the IP address' randomize.

This has come up in trials such as the current Pirate Bay trial and continues to show how much the people that try to protect copyright don't actually know.
