I have a 2007 Compaq Presario PC with Windows Vista Home Premium. Starting today, I encountered various problems. One of the main problems I'm having is that I can't open certain programs. When I open the start menu, I can open the folder with my name, documents folder, music folder and photos folder, computer folder. I can also open the internet but for some programs a dialogue box comes up that says "The item you selected is unavailable. It might have been moved, renamed, or removed. Do you want to remove it from the list?" On other programs, when I left click to open them nothing happens at all; no error comes up and the start menu doesn't go away, nothing happens. On other programs like Control Panel, the start menu closes when I left click to open as if the program will open as usual, but it never does. Also, none of the programs from the quick launch in the taskbar open when I click on them. Another problem I'm not sure is related to the former, is that my computer sound doesn't work at all. I already tried to disconnect and reconnect my speaker cables from my computer but that didn't fix the problem. Even if I plug in headphones, I get no sound. The computer volume is at 100 so it's not that, and it doesn't matter how much I turn up the speakers, no sound comes from them at all. So after all these problems, I decided to use System Restore to go back to a restore point and see if this fixed the problem but, wouldn't you know it, another problem! When I tried running System Restore I got this error: "System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed. Details: An error was detected in the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). The problem occurred while trying to contact VSS writers. Please verify that the Event System service and the VSS service are running and check for associated errors in the event logs. (0x80042318)" I recently downloaded a product key finder program that I suspect might have started the problem and I have since uninstalled the program. I know this explanation has been long but I just wanted to be as detailed as possible. I've tried googling my problems to see if I found any similar to mine but haven't found a good solution. I've tried everything. I don't now what else to do which is why I'm posting my problem here. Please help, I would greatly appreciate it.

You should've started and stopped with " I recently downloaded a product key finder program that I suspect might have started the problem"....

You are out of luck kid. Good luck restoring your computer.... and say no to piracy

Well

A good registry cleaner I use is CCleaner. It's a reliable tool to get rid of worms, trojams, malwares and viruses that affect your pc performances. Free download here http://bit.ly/UrAuos

I guess it's the sotware you need.

Bye Bye

That definitely appears to be a problem related to your registry. Since, it's a bit tricky to play around with registry files, I would prefer you to install MrRegClean. It's available here: http://mrregclean.com. This software is extremely light on your PC resources and does the job in a wonderful manner. You will be amazed on how fast and clean your PC will be once you operate it. Good luck and let me know if you face any more issues!
