Question:
How much bandwith is needed for large downloads?
2014-06-16 14:44:22 UTC
I have 2mbps and I need to download several 1-4GB files. These files are zipped (compressed) and when I finish downloading them (which I did one by one) they where corrupted. The company that sold these files to me told me that I needed a strong connection so that the files won't get corrupted.

So is 5mbps enough?

Thanks for the help :)

Its not about the speed of connection. First of all your bandwidth should be constant i.e it should not vary to much it means is every file we download from internet is transferred in small pieces so if your connection vary to much or disconnect alot then it can corrupt the file as you might some of serious in transfer.

Secondly it could be the server you are downloading i.e if server allow you to access its resources for certain time period and then resets it so in that case you probably need higher speed to finish download before the time exceeds but how much that totally depend on file size and the time limit from server.

Mostly 2MB is enough as far as know, and strong connection means constant connection as mentioned in first. 5 MB is enough or i can say too much but still if you get same issue then files are actually corrupted or contains a virus if you have any antivirus in your system which make them corrupted to avoid the effects..

You need a solid connection (no packet loss, avoid wifi, and maybe download at non-peak times). A fast connection (different Mbps speed) will help download faster but it has NOTHING to do with file corruption

The ONLY difference between 2 Mbps and 5 Mbps is that 2 Mbps will download a 4 GB file and will take 4.55 hours. A 5 Mbps download speed will take 1.82 hours to download (assuming you are getting your max download speed in both cases). Neither value has anything to do with corruption

The internet speed itself shouldn't matter and cause the files to be corrupt. But if your connection is not 100% constant and disconnects even for a moment then the file must "Resume" downloading which can cause it to be corrupt. 5mbps is fast enough to download 1-4gb files. You should see 300KB-500KBps in speed and should take roughly 20 minutes for a 1GB file or more for the larger sizes. If you keep having issues with files becoming corrupt you may look at a download manager program that can handle the resuming process in the event you do lose connection momentarily. A good download manager is Free Download Manager, work very well at resuming and speeding up downloads. Its one I personally use.

Go here and download the LITE version.
