I gave the old email address to a stranger on the internet. His company had offered me a freebie e.g. a German dictionary.

I began to receive a deluge of spam, and I created about 200 filters to pre-delete the spam. This got a bit ridiculous after a while.

I now have 4 email accounts (2 gmail accounts and 2 accounts for private use. I will abandon the old gmail account soon.) I have begun to use mailinator to take in some software serial numbers.

One of the nice approaches to downloading your mail in this fashion is that you can actually change the email accounts you're using as often as you like without losing the messages that you've received. In addition the address book you'll build in the email program will also transfer as well. In fact, using an email program on your PC makes it easier not only to change from one Hotmail account to another, but also to any other email provider that provides downloadable or POP3 access.

Yes, you do lose the ability to manage all your email via Hotmail's web interface. You can still use the web interface, but unless you configure your email program to leave the messages on the server and not all the messages you have will be visible there, they'll have been downloaded to your PC and will be available in your mail program.

Use an e-mail client like Microsoft Office or Mozilla Thunderbird.

With either mail client you can configure your Gmail account to them using the IMAP configuration.

With Outlook you can have two IMAP accounts set on one profile, which will allow you to see both your old Gmail mailbox and your private mailbox. You can select all the messages from your Gmail inbox and do the copy/move to option from the Edit menu and move the messages to the inbox of your private mailbox.

Hopefully your private account that you want to use supports IMAP or at least POP3.

Using Outlook or Thunderbird you can also export your inbox messages to a e-mail archive and then later import to your new mail account.

Look at Google Gmail's help section for instructions on configuring your e-mail to an e-mail client.

you could use the pop3 function to send the mails received in your old account to the new account.
