Question:
How can I make Rust faster on Mac?

I bought the game Rust on steam, and yes, I know, it's on a Mac. I didn't buy it, it was a family computer. But anyway, when I run it, it is very slow to the point where the fps is low enough to make the game unplayable. I mean, I can play it, but I can't do anything (e.c kill animals for food, gather materials etc.). If I lower the screen resolution, the game gets to the point where I can almost perfectly play it without any fps lag. Only problem with this is I can't see to far and I can't see the crafting menu if I open up my inventory. So basically what I'm asking is how can I make the game run as fast as it does on lower resolution on a higher resolution? Will restoring my computer help this? Will RAM help this? Thanks. P.s, I know it can work on a Mac because I've seen plenty of gameplay, and also, I can run a ton of other games on steam like gmod and half life and lots like that. P.p.s, please no "Wow you're on a Mac" or, "get a better computer" comments please. Thanks :)

I'm guessing with your current situation, you don't have a great graphics card.

For most game related issues on fps lag, it is mostly due to the graphics card, or sometimes the CPU. But seeing as how the Mac is very limited with the choices of graphics card, this seems to be the most logical reason.

You will need a better graphics card, which the Mac can't give you. (Or if you plan to dish out $2000 for a 680m Mac) My suggestion would be get a PC with an NVidia graphics cards 460GTX, 560GTX+, 660GTX +, 760GTX+ or AMDs 6700+, 7700+, R92xx.

EDIT: John is partially correct, lowering your settings will increase FPS, but internet connection has no relevance.

Now looking at your specs, your CPU isn't terrible, but it isn't great. As for the RAM, recommended amount is 8GB, but 4GB is still fine.

However as I said, it seems like the graphics card is the issue, actually I'm 100% sure it's the graphics card. As it is in the name itself, "GRAPHICS" card, it controls how smoothly games can run, as long as the CPU can keep up. The more expensive graphics cards obviously provide better performance, and there are hundreds of different graphics cards, while the Mac is limited to a small fraction of those graphics cards, most which are lower tier. Thus providing horrible FPS with games. That is why I am saying, your only solution is to get a PC, with a decent graphics card and CPU.

EDITEDIT:

Well, you'll have to be more specific with the specs. do you know what the graphics card exactly is? Also, the hard drives won't make a much of a difference in gaming performance. The only result you'll probably see with a better hard drive is in loading time. Another issue could be heating, as overheating can cause tremendous lag.

EDITEDITEDIT:

That's an old graphics card, but it should still be able to handle Rust. My apologies for the rude attitude on graphics card (speculated you had a crap graphics card). It might be with overheating or programs in the background hoarding memory and CPU usage. Try turning off some programs in the background and check the temperature of your CPU and GPU.

The best way is to download Ccleaner here http://bitly.com/UrALrK

Or you can go on Windows operating system locate the command prompt and go there to do the following:

Create a Recovery file of system and date it today.

Then begin by;

delete the 'Temp' folders..they have hidden subfolders so you need to set the attributes in order to bypass this. For each subfolder delete all cookies and rubbish left behnd after install-uninstalled programs. Do a 'dir' command to check your progress. Make sure the 'Temp' file is empty.

goto c:\windows\prefetch and delete everything in there..no exceptions

goto c:\windows folder and delete all the '$' files that have been installed by updates. They can all be succesfully deleted and just take up disk space.

Locate the Internet Temporary Files..Check to see how high the saving level is..some have it set at 30 days..but that stores faaaar tooo much data..though it slows down the system overal. Keep this to a minimum..suggest 2 or 5 at most.

Delete all 'cookies' all those you don't need.

Locate the windows directory and go through the folders you know and those you don't need. Check this once a week at least. Some programs will install under XP as NT and older systems where there is no check of systems weight.

Check to see that system files have not changed since last booting. Things like .ini files or .bat are important items.

Check for 'Hidden Directories' all over the disk...do this at the command prompt:

dir *.* /ah wil show these hidden directories

Check the 'dir' command for all parameters

Well this may help a little, but hit f1 when in the game and type: grass.on false

this will remove that annoying grass that causes a lot of the lag problem... but other than that I would recommend looking on youtube for tutorials or something on how to reduce lag in rust.

Edit: Thanks for updating with some specs. I notice you didn't mention any graphics card. If your machine has no dedicated GPU and is using on-board graphics you should expect it to run pretty slow.

And just because it will run on some macs, doesn't mean it will run on all. Mac is a line of computers and different models have different specs.
