Hi Jessi, try this clean up process on your puter before you reformat and reinstall on your hard drive. Sometimes it has to do with the clutter on your computer and this will help with that. It will also help your puter run faster.

RECOMMENDED TO DO EVERY WEEK

The following are purely the steps to take; this is not a detailed outline of what to do. Due to never having used a Mac these options may be slightly different.

Cookies

Go into Control panel, then click on Internet options, Temporary Internet Files, Delete cookies, and then Delete Files, and Clear History depending on your Internet Options program due to differences in Internet Explorer 6 & 7 this may change if it does do the following instead.

If you go into Internet Options & see a Browsing History button click on it, click on the delete all button, another box will come up and make sure to checkmark the box that says also “delete files and settings stored by add-ons” and click on Yes.

Disk Cleanup

Click on Start at bottom of screen, then go to All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and Disk Cleanup

Disk Defragmenter

Click on Start at bottom of screen, then go to All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and Disk Defragmenter

SEARCH FILES & FOLDERS

Click on Start, then Search, All files & folders, type in *.tmp in the “all or part of a file name” box, then in the “look in” box make sure to click on the down arrow button and click on the C:\ drive or if you have more than one local hard drive, you can click for both of them & click on search button

*.tmp (application temporary files; delete any more than 1 day old) don’t delete ones that have to do with your printer this will mess up the settings for your printer. The .tmp files for your printer will show the brand name for your printer.

DON’T FORGET to clear out RECYCLE BIN!

ALSO SCAN &/or UPDATE FOLLOWING:

Ad-aware, Spyware Windows Updates

Anti-Virus Program & any other pertinent updates or scans

DISK CHECK

Click on Start button at bottom of screen, go to My Computer, local disk (C:) – right click & go to Properties, Tools Tab, Error checking – check now, Click both boxes to have check marks. Start, yes, and the next time you turn on the computer, it checks and fixes bad sectors. This takes a while to do.

Regardless of the numbers of people going "OMG Bad Hard Drive" this almost certainly has nothing whatsoever to do with your drives.

Most likely your motherboard contains an odd chipset that is not properly supported by SP2, which is a shame, as it's not easily bypassable.

A bit more info please. Have you been using xp sp1 up till now? Does the sp2 install complete correctly and then die when you reboot, or does it crash mid-install?

Consider the possibility of downloading the full "Network install" version of SP2 (I think they call it Admin Install or something like that now). It might work better as it doesn't depend on networking.

Check in the system events log (right-click My Computer -> Manage -> Event Viewer -> System) in safe mode after a failed boot. It may give some hints as to the source of the problem.

As a last resort, next full windows install, make sure you have all windows patches pre-sp2 installed, as well as all relevant drivers for your pc up to date before applying sp2.

That's the best I can offer you I'm afraid. No guarantees, just the process I'd follow in your situation.

Your Hard Drive could be going bad. However if this was the case, it would A. Not boot at all. or B. Make loud noises. It's really hard to diagnose over the internet without seeing it happen. Your best bet would be a local repair shop. Rather than replacing what may be a good hard drive and having the same issue.

You could format your hard drive and install it again or it could be the HDD that is broken, but a software problem is makes more sense to me.

It looks something wrong in your Hard disk.

Anyways, Go to Run, Type cmd, when the windows of cmd opens then type CHKDSK.

see if there is any bad sector.

If there is no bad sector then check if there is any virus on your Hard drive, remove that if there is.

Maybe it may work, and do reply.
