"MSCONFIG" error?

I went into "MSCONFIG" in order to disable a startup item as I normally do. All of a sudden I receive this error message.

"An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrative account to make the specific changes."

And, now I cannot disable or enable startup items that I normally have no problem doing! Can someone help me figure out what to do next?

Thanks in advance.

I think it could be a possible startup virus that disables the startup altogether.... It's hard to determine from the information you've given, a lot of details could be required to debug this issue, try checking the system log, and see what errors are produced by MSCONFIG.EXE and Google the errors, It might help.

do a system restore to a time before you got the error. then the next time you try to change that setting or service,do it from safe mode and see if that helps. also that service you tried to disable may have been connected to the start menu items and controilled the ability to remove items from the start menu.

Run system restore

Start > all programs > Accessories > System tools

Choose a date to resore your system and follow instructions.

It will reboot your sustem and everything will come back as it was on the date you've selected.

If, for some reason your system resore was disabled, you will need to boot your computer with the windows CD and choose to repair windows.
