If my computer says it 'does not come with surround sound' does that mean that even with a surround sound headset (Razer Kraken 7.1, in this case) the surround sound will not work? or does the headset enable it? Please help. Thanks.

If your head set connects using USB then it can pick up a digital surround signal and produce a surround sound using an internal processor....This by passes the sound card so no matter what sound card you have its being by passed by usb or at least the output portion is......If your head set only has a 3.5mm headphone jack then all it can do is pick up an analog stereo signal but also some headphone can still produce surround from this also using a processor most headsets that can do this though that I have seen need some kind of external box, but its still possible that your headset has some kind of miniature processor built in some where....
But also some final thoughts 7.1 surround requires 7 speakers plus a sub woofer by definition, that's what 7.1 means. Clearly those headsets do not have that....if they had two or three tiny drivers inside each ear cup then maybe there would be something to it but they do not have that either they only have one driver inside each ear cup...if they called it SRS surround or pseudo Dolby or something like that it might be possible but I do not understand how they get away with calling it 7.1surround with only two drivers...seems like a misconception or gimmick to me..to call it that....

If the sound card doesn't support surround sound then it won't do it no matter what you plug into it. Not sure about Kraken headset, but a lot of headsets come with simulated surround sound meaning it can turn standard stereo into surround sound.
Edit: It's called simulated surround sound. You're not getting multiple audio channels, it's simply splitting the 2 channels up and playing it through different speakers. Just like adding multiple speakers to a system, it doesn't make it surround sound, just the same audio through different speakers around a room.

headphones are stereo, NOT surround. surround means more than two speakers.
any headphones claiming surround sound are just bragging. it just is not possible. we are binaural creatures...
