Question:
Recovering Windows XP OS?
2008-02-10 11:47:20 UTC
A friend gave me a Averatec 5400 Laptop that she said was going to throw out because it doesnt work. There are no visible Physical problems, only internal ones.
When you turn it on PheonixBIOS works fine i can get in but once i try to go to Windows XP it never makes it past the windows Loading screen. then it goes to a page that says "We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start succesfully..." and it has 5 options, Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last Known Good Configuration, or Start Windows Normally. Ive tried all and none work i even pressed F8 and did all the anvanced options and still none work i just keeps going in a cycle of shutting down.
So... will a new Travelstar HD work? And if i dont want to do that where can i buy a OS Recovery CD specifically for the Averatec 5400 with Windows XP Home Edition? How much would either cost?

I'd say it has corrupted boot up files. About the only way to fix this is to do a "repair" installation (if you had the disks) or a fresh install of XP.

I really doubt you'll be able to get "Recovery" disks for it. I've never heard of an Averatec pc at all, and I'm pretty familiar with PCs.

Here's an option though in case you have no luck finding what you are looking for. It's about the cheapest I've ever seen an OEM copy of XP.

XP Professional with SP2 is only $69.95

Not only will it be okay for this machine but will work in any other machine as long as you only put it into one PC.

Hope this helps.

If the COA is on the pc you should be able to borrow a disk from a friend and reinstall, as long as it is an OEM and not a Retail version of XP.
