I have recently added a new 1TB hdd (sata II) which is connected to my motherboard using pci-sata card. The system is AMD X2 prcoessor based with 4GB ram and running windows XP (SP3). The hard disc is formatted to ntfs. There's no local area network in use.

This partition on the new hdd is for movies, songs etc.. Now whenever I open this partition, my CPU usage for one core shoots upto almost 100% at times. The mouse starts hanging and this becomes normal after a few minutes. When I copy to or from this drive, I face the same problem as long as the drive is active.

I don't use indexing service. AVG antivirus is set such that the resident shield doesn't scan this partition.

I tried identifying the process causing this but the Windows task manager shows only 1 or 2 % CPU utilization with various processes as it did before opening this drive.

What exactly is causing the high CPU utilization with this new drive?

Its either the Chipset drivers are missing or damaged, or the usual HP software updates

Try resetdma.vbs first:

If you can, connect it directly to the motherboard ports and see if it behaves the same way.

Then check the drive with the manufacturer's bootable CD (Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostics, Seagate SeaTools etc.), run Long / Extended Read Surface Test (will take a few hours). The drive might be bad / have some bad sectors.

1. try to format the system using your new hdd located inside your system unit. you said you added it so it means your using 2 hdd. hope your using both sata hdd.
