System Restore.

But on a Win98 OS I don't think it's called that.

What you can do...

scanreg /restore

Reboot tap F8 choose command prompt.

Type scanreg /restore

Choose date prior to any problem..not the oldest.

There will be only 3 or 4 dates when a backup was made.

Best to only use when needed as you can lose recently d/loaded programs etc.

Also, click on this link and go to Item #4....

The ScanReg command in Windows 98 is more difficult to use than System Restore. But if you have your back to the wall, it could be a lifesaver. It is part of the Registry Checker. The Registry is the database that includes all of Windows' settings.

Your only real option with Win98 when it gets to this stage is to pull out your Windows 98 CD, boot from it and reinstall the software. I know its probably not the answer you want to hear, but its pretty much it if you've deleted system files...

knowing the content of registers or stack dump in windows does not really help like this. The best option which i can think of, is to reinstall windows - either repair it or totally re-install a new copy.
