We've recently bought a new router and cable modem to fix the problem...
but it has not stopped. Sometimes my troubleshooter will tell me that 'the dns
server is not responding.' or I just have 'limited connectivity.' What can I do to fix this?

Try your internet connection with other computer or operating system.

If no problems, the problem is your operating system, try this

If still have problems, the modem, router and wire is trouble, you can call you ISP to fix it.

A wild guess, this is a Laptop?

This is not an uncommon question when it involves Laptop and Wireless: Limited Internet Connection

Simple Fix: Open Menus, Network Connections. Click on the wireless and left click to open it's properties and check mark enable. It it has OK or Apply click this. Close the menus and reboot the laptop. Now the wireless is a permanent connection and not Limited Access.

Reason: All Laptops are set by default as Limited Access for the Wireless Connections. This isn't Common knowledge.

It the issue remains, then trouble shoot for Hardware drivers and the Network equipment.

Call your internet provider. If the tech on the phone can't resolve the problem with your setup and the system on their end is fine, then he/she should send someone to check the line OUTSIDE your home. If your internet provider isn't the company that also is responsible for the physical cable setup outside, then the tech has to send a ticket to the other company to send a technician over. You should verify if there are any associated costs for doing a check. Sometimes, there is no charge as long as the technician doesn't check INSIDE the home for problems.

Check with your provider to see if there are any line problems. We had similar issues a few months ago and our ISP (cable company) said there were line issues.

And has your ISP initialized the new modem? Your internet won't work until that's been done.
